What do you want to see in Miss Fortune's Voiceover Update?

Riot had to cancel their original voice work due to mixed internal feedback and I'm feeling a bit unsure as to what I'm looking for as well.

Many champs such as Yorick Sivir Xayah have one tone that defines them, but MissFortune has grown somewhat multidimensional as her in-game tone and lore have grown apart.

Historically we have Miss Fortune's iconic laugh, confident strut and flirtatious nature, which makes playing MF an upbeat experience compared to "somber yet determined" Yorick, "super serious" Sivir or "complains about everything" Xayah.

Lately Riot has been writing some really interesting lore into MF's character development and it honestly fits better with the overall narrative of Bilgewater. MF is in a leadership position now and is dealing with cut throat opportunists on a daily basis. Lore wise her tone is a touch less bright and colorful.

The ultimate skin does a great job showcasing the upbeat, playful, flirtatious and confident attitude that we've experienced for years and love, but being of an alternate universe it doesn't bear the burden of also having to express some of canon MF's harsher qualities.

How would you balance this game-mood and lore segregation into a coherent voiceover rework? What do you want to see in Miss Fortune's voice update?

For a VO update, Miss Fortune needs to lose the overt super flirtatious nature. As she's presented in the lore that isn't the game, Miss Fortune is much harder, and while she can lay on the sensuality when she needs to, she needs to make us believe that she's the strong woman who beat the shit out of Gangplank and overthrew the pirates ruling Bilgewater with her grit and cunning. She can still flirt, I'm not saying to remove it entirely, but it just doesn't need to be the total focal point of her VO like it is at current. Her VO for Gun Goddess nails her very well. She's a hardass, and she's immature in some instances, but the majority of how she's conveyed is that she's got drive and is on a mission, and is defined by her ambitions and less by her constant dirty innuendos and patronization.

She also needs a rigging and animation overhaul. She got her model updated. She got her kit streamlined. She still moves like a relic, and it makes her feel ancient, to the point where people don't even believe she's had work done. This needs to be corrected. VERY BADLY. I would want Riot to fully complete her VGU, instead of leaving her in this half-assed state she's in now.

IMO Captain Fortune should have become her default skin and her current one would become legacy, the way GP got a skin update at the same time.

As for VO update, all i know is it is needed.

Gun Goddess writer here.

It was interesting writing her from the perspective of the comic, as well as that of a murder jetpack space rogue. I learned quite a few things, and learned to avoid others -- most prominently the almost daytime-TV-wine-mom level of flirtatiousness in her old VO script (we kept a few lines, of course. Dangerous eyes is iconic). The schmaltz is... it's a lot. It's a lot of schmaltz.

In the course of gathering feedback on many, many drafts of the GGMF/base scripts, we also found something peculiar. About half the Rioters who looked at MF saw her as much more roguish and violent, while the other half liked her much more on the flirtatious side. Lean to far into either category and the other half of players would divorce themselves from her fantasy, while if you tried to ride the middle neither side would be completely happy.

This was tested in player labs with very similar results. Early drafts of GGMF leaned into the flirty-dangerous persona, a more playful read I liked because it better represented the Lady Snowblood/Cowboy Bebop/BubbleGum Crisis vibe I was trying to hit for the Steel Valkyries thematic. The feedback?

Where is the violence? Where is the viciousness? We like her flirty, but where is that ruthless side?

So we went back to the drawing board and added a few more ruthless lines. The ones that worked best had a very distinct tonal shift -- she'd start at flirtatious, then shift her range into a darker, more threatening tone. The fantasy worked when she was always in control of the situation and knew it 100%, and that confidence was reflected in her dialogue -- whether she was flirting, fighting, or both. That changed the game, and I think it was reflected really well in our Gun Goddess performance. Jokes are also good.

Now, take this with a grain of salt because the version of MF I was working on lives in a crapsack galaxy full of space pirates, but I think she works best when the two distinct sides of her personality -- flirty and murdery --- are interwoven with a degree of self-confidence bordering on necessity. MF as a character needs that mountain of confidence because if she loses it, if she wavers even a little, she'll lose the aura of fear and respect around her and be killed in under an hour - she knows this, and plays everyone accordingly. That means her sexuality, her power, her decision making, her ruthlessness, her ability to deliberately drop a dude pleading for his life and dump him into the bay -- it all needs to be tied into this aura of extreme confidence, like she could never be wrong no matter what decision she's making, and no matter what mask she's wearing at the time. Like even though she's not forcing you to fall for her, her presence is so commanding that you could never say no.

For GGMF, this was basically her exosuit. "The sex is the suit," as one of the other writers put it. For base MF? I'd say it's almost like a suit of invincible armor, except it's just Sarah Fortune playing you.

My two cents.

So what if she was playful/flirtatious with any out of combat voice lines, but once she's in combat we get scary badass MF? That could be a good way to not ditch something that seems to be integral to her character while also allowing them to show the character growth that has happened in the lore.

I like current MF's VO. I know its old and short but its my favorite female VO. I like the energy and spunk.

Wasnt a fan of gun goddess VO. Space Texan? I get it but it still didnt beat the original

I want to see her voiceover align with her story. She is the woman who brought down Gangplank and took over Bilgewater. Accordingly,

  1. Split her vocielines into mental and verbal ones. Tell us what she really thinks and feels in the mental ones. It can be happy, sad, angry, scared, or anything else.

  2. In the verbal ones, display the character she shows to other people. She sounds like a confident yet melancholy leader with a sarcastic wit.

This character is not just edgy but raw. Her emotions are not just tender but painful and intense. The essence of her character is the dichotomy between her confident, fearless, sturdy behavior and the grieving, furious girl she was as she watched her mother die and her home burn. Her lines must never let the listener detach or numb themselves emotionally. Hit them where it hurts, back off to let them relax, and then hit them again.

Layered on that, put what she had to become. A leader. A fearless warrior. A cunning schemer. And, indeed, an occasional temptress. Have her lines show how she’s torn her between this outer self and the inner one that lives on. Have her talk about dream of stepping down from power and away from her facade to face the feelings in her heart. Add the occaisional whisper of returning to a normal life—cut short by bitter recognition of the unyielding present.

That’s Miss Fortune—not the pirate version of Evelynn but the adult version of Annie.

Taking into account her character development, and that apparently she stills tries to keep a flirtatious and empty headed appereance in public, it would be funny to have voice lines that played with that. That in one moment she is letting out so many swearwords that would ashame a pirate, then suddenly she notices there is someone hearing her, and goes: "Oh, hello, handsome."

Or even better: something related to her manipulative cunning. Like going to TwistedFate and going "Oh, c'mon. Do you really think I would lie to you?" or "When have I lied to you?", as in a reference to "Burning Tides".

I know these are very specific things, but still I think those kind of lines would suit her.

I still believe classic Miss Fortune should have been her Tradition skin, so they could make Captain her real rework design. They would be able to keep her original voice on the tradition skin and be able to go with the more serious voice for her new persona, pleasing both ends of fans.

Wild Geese6/6/2018, 4:10:16 AM6 votes

Just because the character is serious, doesn't mean her personality is serious. All indications is Miss Fortune would tell jokes, be sarcastic, confident, and even be flirtatious.

There is basically not much wrong with her personality in her original voice. It's more that there's not much lines, pop-culture and summoner references. A new voice can have references to lore, more original humor, have special interactions and so on.

I feel like you're secretly working for Riot and just not on your Riot name. Sneaky.. very sneaky!

Hmmmm, well I think part of what people like about League's pirates (GP included) is their crazy boisterous nature. Even with her new story part of the fun of MF is her maniacal laugh whenever she ults.

Even as far as canon goes she does carry around two gigantic pistols and blows everything up, so it's not that much of a stretch.

Im not as avid an MF player, but i think she needs to keep the attitude she has in this rap battle: https://youtu.be/08Jfq0W6ItA Flirtation is very clearly in her nature as a person, even dealing with her enemies in lore she is always kind of a tease. Her first move in any situation is charisma and flirting. But when it comes time for a fight her personality 180s and she's ready for blood.

Like, look here, when theyre pointing out her betrayal of Gangplank, her first response? A sassy remark. https://am-a.akamaihd.net/image?f=https%3A%2F%2Funiverse-comics.leagueoflegends.com%2Fcomics%2Fen_us%2Fmissfortune%2Ffortune-smiles%2Fdesktop%2Fmissfortune-01-05-pc.jpg

And later, when someone kind of mocks her tendency to look pretty, https://am-a.akamaihd.net/image?f=https%3A%2F%2Funiverse-comics.leagueoflegends.com%2Fcomics%2Fen_us%2Fmissfortune%2Ffortune-smiles%2Fdesktop%2Fmissfortune-01-06-pb.jpg

She gets angry. I take from this that she likes looking pretty and she likes flirting, and when someone makes light of that, or insults her with it she gets pissed off. Flirting is who she is, why do they get a right to say jack fucking shit about it?

Her subsequent response is to consider murdering them, but then she remembers... https://am-a.akamaihd.net/image?f=https%3A%2F%2Funiverse-comics.leagueoflegends.com%2Fcomics%2Fen_us%2Fmissfortune%2Ffortune-smiles%2Fdesktop%2Fmissfortune-01-07-pb.jpg

Thats what he would do. It's not her.
After that she decides to go the, 'fun' route https://am-a.akamaihd.net/image?f=https%3A%2F%2Funiverse-comics.leagueoflegends.com%2Fcomics%2Fen_us%2Fmissfortune%2Ffortune-smiles%2Fdesktop%2Fmissfortune-01-09-pa.jpg

And she knows exactly what will happen next. And she likes knowing that, another part of her nature as flirtatious shining through.

https://am-a.akamaihd.net/image?f=https%3A%2F%2Funiverse-comics.leagueoflegends.com%2Fcomics%2Fen_us%2Fmissfortune%2Ffortune-smiles%2Fdesktop%2Fmissfortune-01-09-pb.jpg

She has no interest in outright romance, she is violent and damn near insane. But flirting is a part of her that should never ever be dropped.

Elipo6/6/2018, 4:47:46 PM5 votes

In her recent lore we see her as a strong determined person. Really cunning. We also learn she isn't above using her sex appeal to manipulate (I'm talking about the comic). I think this duality could be managed by having her speaking diferently when talking to herself or by herself (or her team mates, ie when responding to a team mate joke, or some kind of dialog similar to Rakan and Xayah when they are on the same team) to when she's talking to enemies (ie attacking them, chasing them, running from them, teasing them or after killing them). Also KEEP THE LAUGH

Naramiel6/6/2018, 11:36:09 PM4 votes

In my ideal world, she'd still be primarily playful and flirtatious (though definitely with a new voiceover), but have occasional lines that hinted at a harder edge - some of them much harder.

Autrah Fang6/6/2018, 2:30:23 AM3 votes

"Say hello to my guns: Shock and Ahh" should be kept as one of her jokes imo. that, and her laugh should stay the same. other than that she should show how she deals with her current situation lol.

Stars Shaper6/5/2018, 9:14:55 PM3 votes

I expect 4 lines at each step with her telling her tragic story from begin to end.

Metallikaiser6/6/2018, 1:22:34 AM3 votes

Honestly, I am open to them changing her character up considerably, the only thing I dont want them to at all change is the laugh.

Chromatic Eagle6/7/2018, 8:08:20 PM3 votes

I think the Gun Goddess skin is a great blend of wanting revenge, but being a fun, and potentially flirtatious character. Sadly, her lore involves her having to constantly struggle against everything, so I’m not sure that can work in a voice update.

La Bello6/12/2018, 12:37:26 PM2 votes
