What I like about Aurelion Sol
I can remember how pissed I was at the Targon lore update/ Pantheon, once an honorable warrior who wanted to protect his people's culture had become a body snatching monster. Leona, Once a noble Defender of her people had become a zealot who wished to kill someone simply for disagreed with her. Diana, once a tragic figure driven to zealotry, is now not even in control in her own body, being used by her aspect.
However, there was one champion who came out around this time who shared many of my feelings on these so called 'aspects'; Aurelion Sol. He is the only good thing that has come out of that mess, a sympathetic character who hates Targon almost as much as I do. Aurelion Sol will probably be the only champion associated with Targon that I will ever play, and that it because I want him to win.
To Start off, Sol's an interesting character just because of the mythology; a dragon that makes stars. I like champions like Kindred and Ketch because they are cultural stories that have so much potential. (granted I hate it when characters are retconned into being spirits, like Janna and Voli, but i usually like new characters.) Sol could have a variety of appearances in various cultures on runeterra. However, instead of pushing that angle with him, the Lore team decided to tie him into Targon.
Sol once created Stars. He is older than every single world, but being in the cosmic expanse of nothingness, he decided to make stars. He saw this as art, and was quite happy with himself once he saw he had an audience. Of course, being an egotistical being, he was vaguely amused by their self-centered philosophies they made with his art.
He chose one of them, an advanced race that had already moved beyond their pitiful little world. The Star forger came down with glory, and the people were impressed, so impressed they gave him a beautiful crown, which the newly christened Aurelion Sol promptly put on. However, as he left, he soon found that the crown was a trap.
The Beings had enslaved him, and used him as a tool. He battled old friends, the Void, and other empires to create the a might empire across the stars. However, millennia later, he finds the crowns control is weakening. yes, every time he rebelled one of his creations was destroyed, but soon, the Targonians would not keep him, and there would be a reckoning that none may stop.
He comes across to me as the only person worth caring about. If they had merely left him alone, Sol would go back to doing what he loves and the Targonians would come across as people. Every time he tries to escape, Targon destroys one of his stars. Sol loves his artwork, and there could be evidence that the Stars have a will of their own, so they could be considered to be killing Sol's children. Of course, there's also the fact we can only assume that the stars destroyed are uninhabited. I mean, if there was life on it The Imperium of Man The Targon empire would have conquered it... because.
There's also the fact that the only two aspects that interact with him are both jerks to him; Pantheon is his warden which basically means it orders him around, and punishes him for daring to disobey his masters, and Zoe, who belittles him, but seems to try to protect his stars.. and him. Pantheon is easy to explain; no one likes him. Zoe on the other hand annoys me and makes me hate her. This is a being that creates STARS! He made the little ball of sun that you saw as a child. Her people enslaved this being and she knows they destroy stars when he gets out of line. He is used as a tool, and he was clearly meant to be more than that.
Naturally, she treats him like a dog, or 'space doggie' which makes me hope that Sol spares her when he eventually gets free... after all, i want to see what she calls him when he destroys that space empire.
Oh yeah, i should probably mention that while i want him to win, I know full well what he's going to do; Targon will die. Whole planets will be swallows by stars, countless people will die. Targon will ceases to be a power, and Sol may make sure the microbes know their place. Funny thing is, I don't care. I hate This Targon. I want to see it die. I am a horrible person for wanting it, but i am not sympathetic to stupid people. What did the ancient Targonians expect? that they would control Sol forever? Morons. It's merely delayed natural selection at this point.
In short, while Sol is not a good person, he is an ancient being meant to be something more than a petty weapon. he is an artist who loves his creations, and he is a vengeful god, waiting to be free. Hilariously, his freedom is the only thing that helps those bastards feel kind of sympathetic. He's an interesting and fascinating character.
