All the properly ascended Shurimans are anthropomorphic animals.

is a long forgotten Ascended?
One of his mysterious features is his armour. According to Azir's long-form bio what you wore during the Ascending ritual *might *be pertinent to the Ascendant's resulting form. Maybe the armour is what he wore during his ascension.
For all we know he could have been an armadillo who ascended.

You know, I think you're on to something... I can actually see it, even in his design.
Would make for a really awesome reveal if Lore Team ever cared to legitimately get the ball rolling instead of spoon-feeding us ambiguity or vague teasers which never do anything to advance the universe in any meaningful way.
I like the idea that Rammus is older than Shurima as a nation, and was one of the first beings to ever ascend ever. Before Shurimans rose to claim the power of the Gods, a small, unsuspecting Armadillo caught the gaze of God under the Sun Disc, and was elevated to heights never achieved by armadillo kind.
For some reason that sounds cool to me. Might be totally dumb but whatever!
Rammus is a demigod like Anivia, Ornn and Volibear
I don't know, I feel like if Rammus became an ascended it would just shrink the world down that much further.(I really disliked how many people were packed into the Shurima event.)
There's more than one way to anthropomorphize an armadillo,Its much more interesting to me to have other magical mysteries and oddities.
I thought the same during the Shurima event... But I don't know. I didn't actually think he was an armadillo Ascendant, but I instead that he's a human Ascendant, just like Nasus, Renekton and Azir, since we don't really know whether non-humans can Ascend or not. He was not the only anthropomorphized animal that came to mind, but there is Rengar as well, whom I speculated a little about his possibility of being another Ascendant, though I rather him not be. :P
Either way, I feel like Rammus is more unique like he is, an anthropomorphized armadillo, rather than an Ascendant creature, so I'd rather him stay non-Ascendant, if that's what he is. :P
Maybe he was a servant to Azir. You know, cleaning his shoes and doing all the dirty chores. Now in his ascended form he can put his previous experience of crawling to use by rolling around...
Kinda makes sense since he always applies by saying "ok". Azir: "Rammus, clean the toilet" Rammus: "Ok" Azir: "Rammus, take care of the rodent problem" Rammus: "Ok"
