Can someone help explain the Darkin lore?

I wrote a much more detailed post but it got reset before I finished so here’s a quick summary because I don’t want to write it all again

So here’s what I understand about the Darkin lore

  1. The Darkin were like destroying worlds and totally OP

  2. Our favorite aspect of twilight zoe didn’t like that so she made a plan to imprison them forever

3.Zoe got some weapons and offered them to the Darkin

  1. Each Darkin chose a weapon

  2. Zoe basically backstabbed them and imprisoned them into the weapon they chose

Okay so that’s basically all I understand about what happened, please tell me if I have something wrong! Okay now onto the main questions I have.

  1. How many Darkin are there? I know there’s at least two, rhaast and aartrox

  2. What weapons did they choose? All I understand is that Aartrox got a sword and Rhaast got a scythe

  3. Where did zoe put them? I have like literally no idea about this one

  4. How are they coming back? Do they just have to take over a mortal body? Could they take over animals?

Thanks for reading! As a lore nerd I’m just super confused about all of this 😝

What I can understand about the darkin is that-

  1. They were originally shuriman ascended that were fighting on the frontline against the void. Because of this many of the ascended became corrupted, including there previous queen who died in the battle. Even though they were corrupted, they still followed under the rule of the new king Azir. 2.Everything than went to shit after Azir's fall. Without a leader, the corruption took root in there mind and twisted there form. This was when they first started to be called the darkin. 3.Afterf a few years of war and conquest among the different darkin factions, one of the darkin (Ta'anari) got a new assistant, a girl by the name of Myisha (Zoe's predicesor in the aspect of twilight). Together they had a plan to use the Chalicar (Sivir's weapon, the symbol of the Ascended Queen and the key to Azir's tomb) to show they had "the right" to talk and bring peace to the warring factions. And if peace could not be attained than they would use the chalicar to wipe out the remaining darkin.
  2. They had there council and only a few of the darkin showed (not any of the 3 we currently play as). After some arguments, Ta'anari figured that they would not come to a peaceful resolution and chose to use the chalicar. Its moon magic (ascended are created using sun magic) stripped the ascended both of there power and there form as they were reduced back to there human form (only 2 escaped this if i recall). And as soon as they were human, there armies took that moment to kill off the now mortal ascended.
  3. Myisha than took the heart of Ta'anari as well as the chalicar and thats the end of the story we know.

I believe Myisha used those two items to allow the humans to imprison the remaining darkin within there own weapons and than the weapons were sealed around the world so they wouldn't be used again. Aatrox was sealed in the freljord Varus was sealed in a well in a temple in Ionia Rhaast was sealed deep under the immortal bastion in noxus

The Darkin were like destroying worlds and totally OP

They werent THAT op. I mean, they almost brought human race to extiction, but I doubt they could destroy Runeterra, as in, the entire planet. Just to give an idea, the most op ones were Nasus or Renekton level, but most of them were beneath this level because Ascension isnt a perfect process, some mortals who ascend dont "fits" with the power they receive, so they receive a lot of power but less than a "perfect" Ascended(with perfect I mean someone who is 100% (or close to 100) compatible with the power they received), an example of this difference can be seen with Ta'anari aging, while Nasus, who lived much more than him, still alive, even though thatsnot the only difference between a "middle level" Ascended and a perfect one. Though, we've also to take in account that the Darkin learned "many forbidden forms of primal magic", but still, most of them were beneath Nasus level and the stronger ones a bit stronger because of those forbidden primal magics.

Our favorite aspect of twilight zoe didn’t like that so she made a plan to imprison them forever

It wasnt Zoe, it was Myisha. She was basically the one who did Zoe's job before she started to do this job. Myisha probally is dead now.

Zoe got some weapons and offered them to the Darkin Each Darkin chose a weapon

The Darkin were impriosened in their own weapons that they always used, not weapons given to them.

Zoe basically backstabbed them and imprisoned them into the weapon they chose

Myisha just gave knowledge to mortals, the Darkins weren't imprisosened by the Aspect of twilight, they were impriosened by mortals who received knowledge from Myisha.

How many Darkin are there? I know there’s at least two, rhaast and aartrox

There was A BUNCH of Darkin, but as the Darkin war passed most of them died, when twilight of the Gods happened, centuries after the war began, there was at least 13, 6 are confirmed to be alive after Twilight of the Gods and just 3 are confirmed to be trapped and alive nowadays, those 3 are Varus, Rhaast and Aatrox.

What weapons did they choose? All I understand is that Aartrox got a sword and Rhaast got a scythe

As I said before, it was their own weapons, Aatrox just used a sword, Rhaast a scythe and Varus a bow since their shuriman days, hell, Varus was an archer before he even ascended.

Where did zoe put them? I have like literally no idea about this one

It wasnt Zoe, and it wasnt Myisha either, we know that a Golden Queen hid Varus, but we dont know who hid the others. Varus was hid in a temple close to Pallas, a city in sourthen Ionia. Rhaast was hidden close to Vindor, a noxian city in Valoran, I believe that he was hidden in Fallgren an island city that was conquered by Noxus recently, but we dont know for sure, the only confirmation is that Rhaast passed though Vindor when Noxians were taking him to the Immortal Bastion. IIRC in Aatrox's Q&A they said that Aatrox was trapped in Shurima. Varus was searching for his sister in Shurima.

How are they coming back? Do they just have to take over a mortal body? Could they take over animals?

Not sure about animals, but I think that this quote answer the first two questions:

From the moment a darkin weapon chooses a host, that mortal will find themselves compelled by a power they can scarcely hope to master—no matter what seductive whispers they might hear in their mind. That power will soon take root in flesh and bone, reshaping them into a new, monstrous amalgam.

So the Darkin used to be acsended god warriors. Had their minds a little currpupted by the void when they fought it. Then shurima fell. So after that the darkin fought for power and control with each other which was causing death and destruction to the world.

The aspect of twighlight tricked one darkin into killing a bunch, killed him and then gave the humans a way to trap the rest of the darkin in weapons.

They have to take over a mortal host to come back. We only know of Varus, Rhaast and Aatrox at the moment but we know there are a few more.

Varus fused with two guys so they all fight for control. Rhaast is currently fighting Kayn for control over the body (your in game decides who wins. Aatrox wants to die but can’t so he just wants to shred everything until nothing is left (always looking for a new host).

I can answer a few of these.

  1. Five, maybe

  2. Va(a)rus got a bow. Beyond that, no idea

  3. It seems like they were buried in various locations in Runeterra's known map. Varus was in that well in Ionia, Rhaast was in Noxus, and I think Aatrox was sealed in the Freljord

  4. If someone's stupid, desperate, or bold enough to touch them with their bare skin, a Darkin can attempt to bodyjack whoever picked them up. I think they can only do this to people (humans, Vastaya, maybe Yordles).

  1. Varus is actually a Darkin, making the total 3 currently, and from a taunt from Rhaast there's at least 2 more, making it 5.

  2. Unknown. Weapons could vary since we've gotten a sword, bow and scythe, so maybe we could get a maul, axe or even a whip.

  3. They might have just been collected/scattered over time by people throughout the world, eventually becoming locked up and hopefully forgotten or guarded, like Varus.

  4. People I guess just hear about them and search for them or just find them by incident and they take over. It's not that hard to think people will start finding them after some time with ruins and rumors.

  1. They number five in the present day, although we only know of Aatrox, Rhaast, and Varus right now. One of the others that's still around is likely Varus's sister. Once there were more, as "darkin" was the name given to the Shuriman Ascended who warred amongst each other following the death of Azir and the fall of the Shuriman capital. Most of them were killed in a plot enacted by Myisha and a darkin named Ta'anari.

  2. Myisha (not Zoe, but the Aspect of Twilight before her) didn't offer them weapons, they were sealed into whatever weapons they used as Ascended.

  3. It's currently unclear how exactly they were sealed and what happened to them afterwards, although we know Varus was defeated by a "golden-armored warrior queen" who brought him in bow form to Ionia and sealed him as well as herself in the Pit of Pallas.

  4. Basically, yeah, just a mortal body, although there seems to be a battle of wills involved in the process. Aatrox is the most experienced at this, and is able to instantly dominate the mind of whoever picks up his sword. Rhaast is still battling for dominance with Kayn, and Varus has almost total control over his body, although Kai and Valmar can still speak within his mind and can sometimes wrest control for a small amount of time.
