When did everyone start caring about lore so much?
I have never seen this many threads made about a champions story, especially with s9 many comments and up votes. I never realized so many people read lores.

Started mindlessly enjoying the lore when I started playing way back in season 1 I believe.
Started actually enjoying around the Bilgewater event.
Started getting actively angry at the Targon update. And pretty much stayed there since.
They don't care, I think most of them are just hung up on the whole homosexuality thing but don't wanna be see as "that kinda person". Let's be real, the majority never gives a shit. I've ran a fanfiction and lore blog for years, together with other people who did the same. We were a small circle, completly insignificant compared to the whole mass of players.
Even here on the boards for the last years you only had the same dozend faces being the prominent posters (Greenlore, Malicious, Sharjo, etc.) and that was it. It only got a bit better with the recent events, but when it comes to old lore, most people seriously don't really give a shit and only say it because it makes them stand out like hipsters ("I liked lore before it was cool"). Typical disgusting human mediocrity if you ask me.
There's generally a lot of discussion any time something controversial is used in any format, so while the fact that the two characters Varus "posesses" are alluded to be gay, it's really only a small part of his entire lore update. Fortunately the amount of discussion has also allowed a significant amount of people who care about the lore as a whole to speak up about stuff.
But yeah, a lot of people read lore on the side.
The gay stuff, there have arguably been much worse lore pieces and the reaction wasn't anywhere near this bad. Also the advertising on the client probably attracted people.
I care about a lot of backstory retcons but it's hard to get a conversation going about it without a lot of eyes on it. The accidental PBE preview (which generated negative buzz before there was any mention of sexuality) combined with the high profile music video was the perfect storm to get people talking about why it hurts so much to have the characters you like taken out behind the shed.
