Riot can you comment on why the winners of Worlds can no longer pick the champ their skin goes to?

"Riot asked them to submit 3 champions that they wanted skins for in order. He chose Lee Sin, Elise and Qiyana. He doesn't think Qiyana is a good idea now and really wants Lee Sin"

Is it for financial reasons where you guys won't make a worlds skin for a champion that isn't popular enough? Is it because if a champion they pick already has/had a recent skin, you guys won't make the worlds skin for them? Is it due to maybe a future VGU being soon so you don't want to have to make the skin twice? Some clarification would be great.

I feel like if someone dedicates their life to your game and wins the biggest yearly tournament, they should be able to just choose whichever champ they want (as long as it was played once at worlds). Why the sudden rule change?

There was no rule change. That quote directly contradicts everything you just said.

Remember when one SKT player asked for Kalista but they made Sivir instead? Then the community uproar made them make Kalista? Lets do that again. Winners deserve the skins they want.

Not Riot, but here's my industry assumption:

  • Oversaturation: Riot might want to avoid giving a champion a skin when they'd get one within 2-4 patches. (Yes yes Kai'sa I know)
  • Money: Riot might want to push the World Winners towards more profitable skins (This is the one boards will believe most).
  • "Balance": In sense of composition. Don't want 3 assassins, an ADC and a support.
  • Flex picks: Multiple people picking the same champ due to flex picks.

All players do that. We usually just don't hear about the other ones.

Its about the concept that Riot has to show the winning team for an OK. Sometimes, the team aesthetic just doesn't look good on a champion, or, the player is dissatisfied with how it looks. They prepare idea for all 3 choices, the one the player chooses is the one that will get refined.

You happen to be cherry picking a quote and making an assumption.

worlds skins have always been chosen out of the champs they have played in their series. Quarter, semi, and grand final.

Actually I think that it has always been like that. SKT was originally going to get SKT-Sivir in 2016, but when Riot reworked the skins to be higher quality due to backlash, they actually changed it to SKT-Kalista, because the player originally wanted Kalista and not Sivir.

This means that originally Riot disregarded the wish of the player and picked Sivir over Kalista, meaning that the player didn't have complete control over who gets the champ either.

It being the same handful of pro balanced champs every year would be a good reason why

In the past players also would have to choose a different champion if the champion they wanted was not deemed eligible by Riot. Most famously this occurred when Faker was denied SKT Ahri for his Season 3 World Championship because he didn't play Ahri during the later half of Worlds, especially the finals.

Makes sense to me, if Riot is already planning a skin for one of the champs it's not good to release 2 close to each other.
