I've been mulling over things for a bit, and I'm trying to piece things together from some year old scraps.
In the Bard Q&A the narrative folks talked about the Magical Friction and intersecting realities, in particular how the magical friction was emitted by all worlds but existed in such a way that it is in another layer of reality than other things, and how there are many planes that intersect with Runeterra and that in the context of those questions, Bard can traverse all of those, which is why he knows Soraka; he's been to her plane before.
Mount Targon seems to be linked in with all of this, almost as if it's like the heart of Runeterra itself and a sort of convergence point for realities, where the barriers between them weaken due to the intersection, allowing for powers from one realm to spill over to another gradually. In that way we have the realm with the giant city from which Leona, Diana and Atreus were empowered, Bard's home realm and Soraka's home realm as possible places that could link up here, depending on how things work. Since the Void also intersects with Runeterra it makes sense why Voidborn can appear here too, as like in southern Shurima the dimensions are close enough for travel via portals and the like.
I'm wondering if Mount Targon is unique to Runeterra in terms of its function. As the primary planet in the continuity and with so many planes rubbing up against it there's gotta be something important about Runeterra above these other worlds, which is why folks like Bard, Soraka, Pantheon and the powers that empower Leona and Diana find their way here, as a means of protecting it.
With the earth of the mountain itself being alive I'm wondering if perhaps this is Runeterra ensuring it's protected on its own side of things; the very land itself tries and tests the mortals who come to the Mountain, so the world ensures that such a location isn't tampered with and disrupted.
Just some thoughts of mine; not really sure of things at the moment considering this is all multi-dimensional bollocks, so I'm gonna keep thinking on things.
