what is "mana" exactly vs "energy" vs "resourceless"
if mana is magic based why does normal champs like vayne have it she has no magic based properties wouldn't energy make more sense? is there any lore reason behind it?

Well, the ninjas have energy BECAUSE THEY'RE FLIPPIN' NINJAS! And maybe everyone that uses mana is magic to some capacity, and champs like Garen and Kat are the only truely skilled warriors because they don't need magic to contend with everyone else. Also, Mundo.
Well, all energy champs except Lee Sin are members (or former member for Zed) of the Kinkou Order... Something about perfect balance and oneness with the universe and all that kind of stuff.
Although since Lee Sin is an Ionian monk makes enough sense.
Headcanon alert on this one; but manaless champions are probably using no magical power while mana ones are using some (This would imply J4 and Xin Zhao are cheating!). Garen is true to the Demacian way. Kled only uses his traps, mount and weapon, Rumble's abilities are all mechanical, Only Riven's Sword is magical, not her techniques. Shyvanna's abilities are natural from her dragon bloodline, Aatrox and Vladamir use "blood magic" which must be different - and so on.
