Neeko is a lesbian: Let's please calmly discuss it.

Alright, you read the rest, I want to make a series of disclaimers to avoid offense, as well as prepare my "mission statement" so to speak

I Am a fan of league, loved it for quite a while, took a break this year but otherwise, I've liked most if not all of what's been going on with it. Lorewise and gameplay wise. I am admittedly a white, straight male. I am also a Christian and therefore I lack the perspectives held by the people in any of the communities where homosexuality is accepted and/or normal. I do not have any issues with people who are not Christians, atheists, those with different sexual orientations than mine. In spite of the reputation that Christians tend to have. Although unfortunately, it is true in most cases. I do not mean to call anybody in riot out, by name or by profession/ethnicity/sexual orientation, etc, etc. However, if I could get some responses to my questions and concerns I would appreciate it. If I sound like I'm talking down to anybody, with how many "disclaimers" I'm making, I'm sorry, but I really am trying to word my thoughts very carefully. Please understand.

To start with, I think I should talk a bit about what I know as far as lgbtq+ representation in league goes (and correct me if I'm wrong about anything). Of course, the elephant in the room is that taric was gay because he wore pink armor and such. Although I've been out of the loop for a while I remember people wanting it to be confirmed that he was gay after he'd been reworked, but it seemed like it was decided that since it was mostly a joke to call him gay for so long it would be better if there was a champion created from the ground up to be gay, rather than retrofitting anybody to be gay. Of course, not everybody thought this way and ideas and ships were made. Then when varus had his lore update and we saw how he was a darkin with two gay dudes in his body (their bodies?) people reacted generally positively, and accepted it. I did as well, and honestly, that might have been the best character to retroactively make gay, aside from vi depending on how you feel about that.

So with that in mind, here comes the first character introduced to us as a lesbian. She isn't particularly stereotypical, she seemingly is beloved by the community, although some people are skeptical as to how well her kit is going to pan out, and rightfully so. I am interested in knowing more about her conception as a character, as I think it might reflect somewhat negatively if she was not initially conceived as a lesbian character. I understand that the character designers iterate on champions so it can be hard to pinpoint where she was technically conceived if the design process was particularly long. But I think it's worth asking since aside from varus, We aren't outright told what a characters sexual orientation is in most cases. In some, it's obvious like with rakan and xayah. But Buy n large we aren't outright told most of the time.

I also think it's fairly coincidental that she was the first new champion that could have gone through a lengthy design process, after riots scandal as to how their work environment feels to the women and new workers working there. I understand the plight on both sides, neither have it easy, and there's really no easy solution to the problem of hiring and ensuring a diverse workforce so that nobody feels left out or unrepresented. On the other end of things, it takes time to screen employees and make sure they're the right person for the job, especially when so many people are applying, and you only have so long to hire so many qualified people.

I also think when she was made to be a lesbian matters because if it was just tacked on, just added on as an afterthought like "hey we could make her gay" just a few weeks before recording voice lines or finalizing her design for the in-game model. Or whatever the process is like late in development. Those are things that only rioters can confirm, and if they don't want to I understand. So what can we talk about? I asked for a discussion right? Let's say that coming out as lesbian or gay or what have you isn't being normalized/considered normal by anybody's standards. In fact, the majority of the population is strictly against anything that deviates from the norm. So in this world, riot wants to be the brave frontrunners and take a stand for what they believe in on a personal level. The best way to do it? Hype up and eventually release a champion that is outright gay/lesbian. Put more work into her character, kit, design, and in-game lines than any other so far.

That sounds great, doesn't it? If you care about representation that's what would mean the most right? So that's why I've said so much about the potential state of her inception as a lesbian. It matters how it came about because of how people might receive that kind of a societal shattering character in the real world. Now real quick lets go back to the other world. A purely hyperbolical one mind you. Where this champion is being released. Now imagine if instead of a character everybody worked super hard on. It was just a guy with an extremely stereotypical gay way of talking, somebody super flaming (for lack of a better term), and somebody who constantly makes obscene remarks about other men.

I personally, don't see this as good representation if that's what they're aiming for. I have Aspergers and I might be totally overthinking this. I'm high functioning so I'm not trying to use that as an excuse not to yell at me. I just want to say I if the representation is the goal, as well as writing a strong well balanced and developed character, this may or may not be the best way to do it. I don't know if there will be a blogpost about this, and I haven't read the lore (and I don't think much is out yet where I live) but I think this is a decent way to start talking about this before anything else comes out, rather than scrolling through jabs an accusations on twitter and reddit. Especially given how, it is hard for riot to officially take a stance on this since the sensitivities in other countries where the game is playable are not the same as ours. Especially in countries like Brazil where being openly gay is ostracised. So officially making a character gay is a geniunly bold move, since that kind of statement could potentially result in lost revenue from outraged customers.

Anyway, correct me on any mistakes/bad comments I made. Did I overthink this subject? Does anybody even care? Lemme know.

Honestly, as a gay male, representation in the media is really important. However, having characters whose entire themstic is just focused on them being gay is really demoralising and unrealistic. Honestly, how they handled Neeko is exactly what I like to see. A character, that they've already designed and given a personality to and just has their sexuality tagged on as an afterthought really feels like the right step in normalising homosexuality.

Hi, actual lesbian here, just chiming in to say I really like Neeko. I'm actually more interested in her than I would probably be otherwise, since squishy mages aren't really my thing, but now I have a level of investment in her that I wouldn't have otherwise.

What do you mean discuss? It's great that she's a lesbian! Sexuality and gender identities that lack proper representation NEED to be confirmed or else it's not representation. If it's not out right stated, people assume straight and cis gendered. The only way to get representation to groups that are marginalized and under represented is to confirm it out right. Identities are super important to marginalized groups and supporting them with representation is super important especially since a lot of representation paints LGBT people as evil predators.

Her character isn't even based on her sexuality. It's just something she also happens to be.

Like I've said many times before on this forum, I cannot grasp how champion sexuality carries any value at all, it's just... Why? Who cares? For gods sake it's a fictional character.

Neeko being a lesbian didn't really change my opinion of her, and I say this in the best way possible. She's a vibrant fun character with or without that detail. It doesn't feel like pandering and even if you don't like the detail you could play her with no problems. I don't really care what a character's sexuality is, but if they want to diversify it, then fine. Seems harmless enough if Riot does it in this way.

I didn't read the lore yet But , a girl loving a girl doesn't mean she is Lesbian , probably Nidalee was the first person ever talked to her and was nice to her ?Even if she loved her , it really doesn't mean she is Lesbian , there is a possibility that she is Bis or , maybe just an innocent Love since Neeko seems like a child to me so she doesn't even know what Love is

And because I forgot to mention this, a rioter officially confirmed that she is a lesbian, as GaleWonder down below pointed out and linked to the tweet where it was confirmed. So there is no ambiguity.

personally im fine with there being new gay champs, but im not fine with turning old champs gay randomly(varus)

i think your message is okay, it doesn't come off as homophobic to me. i'm a bi girl (i like girls and guys!) and personally i'm really happy how they handled neeko. :) however it is pretty saddening how some people are reacting to it haha... it's like tracer all over again..

there are some people saying that making her gay is just forced diversity and unnecessary, but i dont understand how? i mean, her sexuality is not her personality. she seems really bright, naive and kind of blunt, optimistic chameleon girl.

it's nice to see riot being brave and making her lgbt. i think it will be nice to see for people like me and neeko :D

i also love her character design, it is so unique! the upcoming winter skin and its chromas are just... <3 [sg-lux]

I appreciate the time you spent on this post but I really don't see a reason for a discussion about Neeko's sexuality. She is a lesbian okay nothing scary its just attraction and love.

Honestly who the hell cares. Riot has pushed and hinted at heterosexual ships for a really long time and nobody bats an eye, nobody seems to think that that's "going to far and pushing an agenda and messing with my champs and my ships and focusing too much on sexuality blah blah" they even release Xayah and Rakan which THEIR SEXUALITY AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS P MUCH MOST OF THEIR STORY and everyone loves it, but Riot hints at and pretty much confirms a female champ has a crush on another female champ as part of her story and people lose their goddamn minds and cry that Riot is pandering and focusing too much on sexuality.

A Superb Villain11/20/2018, 7:11:04 AM3 votes

It is a thing. Applying value to sexuality is something that is extremely subjective, and as a consequence you will receive a variety of differing opinions. Neeko is a colorful, shapeshifting being, which I find a bit too on the nose; she reinforces stereotypes. However, that is my opinion.

It is good that you invited discussion with others to form a more conclusive personal assessment rather than relying solely on your limited perspective. We can only see so much from where we stand.

Binding Eclipse11/21/2018, 7:47:05 AM3 votes

I don't think it's homophobic or paranoid to want to understand more about her character development. It is, however, blatantly homophobic on part of the people who -- no matter how the character develops or when these traits are set in stone -- want to find a convenient way to raise an issue with it regardless.

Kudos to you for not being a douchebag.

Now everyone can relate to someone in LoL!

Olath Quortek11/20/2018, 7:14:32 AM3 votes

Shrug, I think you did a pretty good job with your post, all things considered. Well written imo. I think it's something worth discussing and even overthinking if that's what we're doing.

I don't have any great insight, just thought I'd chime in. Randomly tacked on sexuality for no real reason is annoying imo. I find it silly that people feel the need to make content, or push for other people to make content, that "represents" other worldviews, perspectives, ways of life etc... but naturally making a diverse cast is a good thing.

I'm not saying I think Rito did anything right or wrong or good or bad with this character, nor am I trying to offend anyone. I'm simply stating that I feel there is a good way to go about it and a bad way to go about it; natural diversity is good; tacking on forced "representation" just for the sake of doing so is bad.

As far as I can tell Neeko is fine for now...

Who cares? League has 142 champions why "shit yourself" that 1-5 happen to be in the lgbht+? If "someone" doesn't like the fact that the new champion is lesbian so don't play the champion.

Handy Sandy 11/20/2018, 1:04:49 PM2 votes

I didnt even know she was gay lol it's in like only 1 or 2 of her lines right? so what's the big deal you won't encounter it 99% of the time. I woulda thought all the lines talking about how men are gross when she morphs into them are more her being childish like how little kids say the opposite gender has cooties.

TyrekGoldenspear11/20/2018, 1:38:11 PM2 votes

You've literally done no bashing of her because of her sexuality, you're fine.

I am not particularly certain if how she was conceived and at what point they decided to make her gay particularly matters.

She's been confirmed as such and now we do with the information what we will.

Chromatic Eagle11/20/2018, 6:19:53 PM2 votes

Weirdly enough, I'm annoyed that Riot hasn't made Neeko's orientation more overt. I was fine when relationships and sexuality went as far as appearances, but with Xayah/Rakan, Zoe, etc., you'd think Riot wouldn't be afraid to have a gay champion be more flirtatious. I don't know if the Varus feedback (which was mostly due to the old lore) scared them off, but it sucks having the first openly gay champion be confirmed via twitter.

6 Foot Licker 911/26/2018, 10:50:55 AM2 votes

Riot can you please add something about it in her lore... rather than beating around the bush lore wise? I love the world of Runeterra and reading all of the lore... but the only reason we KNOW Neeko is gay is because 1) her in-game quotes... 2) you TOLD us. m not saying i love or hate that she is gay.. im okay with it. But I'd LOVE if you explored this detail more in her lore. Thanks

DotaFrost11/20/2018, 3:16:24 PM1 votes

You are right. What most people dont understand is the fact that nobody gives a shit about sexual attraction except weak minded baffoon who needs approval. She could be straight, homo, zoophile or helicopterphile for all i care. Neeko shouldn't be define by her sexual orientation. Her past and her dreams should dictates how we see her as a character. Her personality is also a major factor. She should be loved or hated base on what she has done and what she will do. What she wants in her chameleon vajayjay matters very little. For example, take a guy name joe average. Joe is a diligent worker and a great guy in general. Oh and he is gay. See how odd it is to add his sexual orientation in joe's bio? Remove the fact that she is lesbian and it wouldn't change the story at all. Adding it is a difference case. It means you're pandering to a very very very small group of people that are extremely obnoxious. They voice out their sexual orientation like some sort of pride. Which makes no sense.... do i go and yell in the street saying "I AM STRAIGHT I LOVE WOMEN YAY!!!!" People will simply tell me to shut the fuck up.
