After reading the Nunu bio, I have a theory

EDIT: Be sure to look through the comments, as I do understand that not all the things here are accurate, but I really don’t want to have to go back and restructure certain parts when the theory is still the same basic concept.

Okay, for those of you who don’t know, I’ll give you a basic rundown of Freljord lore:

The Freljord was originally overseen by three sisters: Avarosa, Serylda, and Lissandra. One day, cyclopian creatures known as the Watchers offered them magical power and immortality in exchange for their servitude. The people agreed and were dubbed “Iceborn”. Avarosa would grow restless and stir up a rebellion against the Watchers, alongside her two sisters. They petitioned Ornn, the god responsibile for shaping the Freljordian landscape by literally wrestling with the earth, to help them. He reluctantly agreed, and proceeded to dig the Howling Abyss as well as build the bridge above it. The Watchers were lured there and a great battle ensued where the Watchers were all ultimately pushed off and fell helplessly into the darkness. After the battle, Lissandra casted a spell over the bridge to act as a seal. However, according to Ornn, magic ruins the quality of his work, and would over time eat away at the bridge. Lissandra would go on to engineer the death of Avarosa and purge all knowledge of the Watchers. She used her magic to disguise herself as the Frostguard’s leader, and every time she reaches the end of her mortal lifespan, she simply kills the next leader in line and takes on their appearance. The descendants of her sisters were also getting to work: Avarosa’s descendant Ashe now lead the Avarosan tribe and wielded her ancestor’s enchanted true ice bow, while Serylda’s descendant Sejuani lead the Winter’s Claw.

So, with the Nunu lore released (you can go and read that for yourself), we know that Willump’s people had power over the ice, similar to the Iceborn. We also know that they suffered a betrayal at the hands of “the blind one” and buried an “evil”. The former is an obvious reference to Lissandra, who had her eyes clawed out by an Ursine. The second is most likely the Watchers due to one question I had:

What if the Watchers gave the humans power that wasn’t theirs to give?

We know that the Watchers are referred to as the “masters” of the Void. However, there are some things that don’t add up.

First, why would they be in the Freljord? The most prominent Void rifts are locates in Icathia; about as far away as you can reasonably get from the Freljord.

My answer to this is purely conjecture, but it is known that world runes have the capability of opening Void rifts. With this knowledge, it might be plausible that someone, namely Lissandra, could’ve used one or more to summon them.

Secondly, why are they blue instead of the usual purple and why can they give the ability to manipulate ice? None of the others Voidborn exhibit anything like this. However, we do know that the Void feeds on magic as well as biological matter and will most likely gravitate to the nearest source of naturally occurring magic. In this case, it was Willump’s people. Lissandra in some fashion betrayed their trust and lead an assault alongside the Watchers to steal the yetis’ magic. They succeeded, but not before the yetis sealed a great number of the Watchers beneath the ice with what magic they had.

The absorption of such a large quantity of natural magic most likely lead to their differing appearance and powers. Sort of “you are what you eat”. Shurima doesn’t have a lot of naturally occurring magic, so the Voidborn only stayed in their raw forms (I hate to think what would happen if a Void rift opened in Ionia). From here, they were able to grant people the yetis’ power without corrupting their minds with the Void’s touch.

Of course, they weren’t able to procure all of it, as the last of the magic was guarded by Willump and later bestowed upon Nunu. However, now we know why Lissandra was so eager to find out about the song concerning Willump. She wants to find a means of revinving the Watchers with a dose of the natural magic, and the only thing she can think of is the stuff they stole from the Yetis.

As an aside, doesn’t it seem a little too convenient that the Notai were attacked by bandits and the Frostguard who saved them have a leader who just so happens to be looking for a Notai song?
