Help Me, Riot!

I love to make things like posters, book covers, symbols etc. I really wanted to know the kinds of programs and features you guys use to make such things as the Targon symbol, or the Freljord marks. Even the Shuriman crest, which is more of an item, intrigues me! I'd love to know if anyone else has advice for these or even if they know of a program that will help with the shaping and coloring process.
