The psychological effects of violating norms and its effect on the transgressor
Posted this over on r/akalimains, but thought this might be reach a wider audience to foster discussion / get noticed by the champion team.
Alright, so my only problem with the otherwise awesome Akali rework was the attitude change they gave her, and as someone who works in behaviour research it's probably bothered me more than it should. However, I've seen many comments around here stating that it is sort of an expected attitude when people break free from a controlled environment. So I went ahead and tried to find any peer reviewed literature on the topic. Here is an interesting read from the folks at the University of Amsterdam in case you are into that sort of thing: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/273834235_The_Social_Dynamics_of_Breaking_the_Rules_Antecedents_and_Consequences_of_Norm-Violating_Behavior
Now the authors found that the "majority of (quantitative) studies point to a variety of negative emotional consequences, including feelings of guilt, shame, and disappointment in the self". They find only some qualitative evidence that the norm-violating behaviour makes the transgressor feel good, which is sort of expected.
I think my biggest problem is that there is no reflection of any of this guilt/disappointment in the attitude of the new Akali, either manifesting as some respect towards her earlier mentors (who acted as surrogate family for her growing up), or as a measure of some humility.
Given the composed personality demonstrated by her previous lines, this change seems the hardest to accept, given the claim that the rework is a time-skip. I can understand some aggression given that she is a killing machine who feels let down by her clan, but maining her would become significantly more enjoyable if she is given some depth. Would it be possible to look into fleshing out her character more in this sense through the lore for the good chunk of us mains who have a problem with this? Thanks for the rework!
