Crazy theory, you say? The Darkin, the Void, and a white horseman walks into a bar...

Since Aatrox the sword is war-themed and Rhaast the scythe is death-themed I'm gonna make the assumption, for this argument, that the Darkin are themed after the four horsemen; Conquest/Pestilence, War(Aatrox), Famine, and Death(Rhaast).

Notice Conquest/Pestilence; the rider of the white horse is sometimes interpreted as the former, sometimes as the latter.

Now, the nature of the Darkin is that they are magical living weapons of immense apocalyptic power that corrupt it's host and transform their bodies into a demonic, organic armor. I've heard this one before... the Void..?

From the Universe site:

The Void (...) where terrifying living weapons were wrought to win an ancient and long-since ended war.

The thematic and visual parallels are many and obvious, if one thinks about it.

My theory is that the Void was created by one of the Darkin run amock, trapped in another dimension to protect Runeterra or some other world(s).

As "a horseman": the Voidborn are hungry hungry hippos, so Famine would make sense. My personal favorite theory, though, is the Void representing the white horseman, Conquest AND Pestilence, a combination of their nature as conquering, world-devouring weapons and insectoid horrors. Bonus connection: when voidborn first enter runeterra they start out as ivory white, like the horse, according to Diana's Night's Work story.

So that's my theory! Of course, something more down to earth would be Varus' weapon being Conquest, the weapon of the white horseman being a bow n' all. But that wouldn't make for fun n' crazy theory-crafting!

I like the theory but I think Varus is pestilence. Hell, he puts blight stacks on a target after all. If that's not a pestilence then I don't know what is.

"the Voidborn are hungry hungry hippos"

i only upvoted because you mentioned hippos!♥♥ xD

Well theres supposed to be 5 so if we go horseman theme they might split conquest and Pestilence in 2. And conquest is differentiated from war, by being about gaining territory.

Varus would be Pestilence

That's just a theory... A GAME THEORY

I'm pretty sure the Void and the Darkin have no connection, even if they have some similiarties. I mean, yes, the whole "weapons takes over his host" thing did make me think about a well-known prophet, if riot would go for something similiar for Malzahar, since I really think he does have some higher power/deity with him and isn't only merely corrupted by the void, but this probably only my opinion and doesn't belong in this discussion.

As far we know about the lore, it was always there... waiting to invade and consume Runeterra. Darkin are powerful, but I don't think a) that one alone could corrupt a whole dimension and actually control it all and b) we know that there is a bigger/higher deity in the void who is orchestrating all this. And honest? It doesn't sound like a darkin at all. Darkin are kinda... narrow-minded. They don't think far ahead. This deity, who we don't know, seems to be far more patient and intelligent. This deity isn't acting like darkin, in my opinion.

And another thing - we know darkin were imprisoned in this weapons. If someone had the power to trap a darkin into an immobile object or throw one into a dimension without any chains to bind him, that would you do? I think, the first opinion sound better and safer, doesn't it?

So I guess, there have their similitaries, but nothing more.

I think there are 5 Darkins, but the horsemen of the apocalypse are only 4.

ModAcademy Kayn6/30/2017, 5:08:21 AM2 votes

Aren't there 6 Darkin though?

Counter theory The 4 horseman theme wouldn't work with the darkin because there are 5 of them. We know this from kayn's interractions with the other darkin, namely these two in particular :

  1. Kayn kills Aatrox, Kayn : "and then there were four"
  2. Kayn taunts ally Varus (i forgot the exact line but it goes something like), Kayn : "Varus, together the three- no, wait -FIVE of us shall conquer all!" At first i assumed that kayn was talking about the darkin AND the host on the first one with aatrox, but since aatrox has long since taken over his host wielder, that wouldnt be possible. The same goes for varus, the body is still there, but ultimately they have been taken over by their weapons. Just my 2 cents on the matter, might be completely wrong

Astrox's lore says he's one of five Darkin remaining, so conquest/pestilence need to be split into two Darkon for that to happen. Interesting theory!

where do the watchers fit in all this conspiracy?

ProtestantCaesar6/29/2017, 2:41:11 PM2 votes

I think it more likely that there was once a war with two sides and each side had living weapons. One side had Voidborn. The other side had Darkin.

Tattersall6/29/2017, 2:11:42 PM2 votes

This is great, but there's one problem:

Aatrox is a legendary warrior, one of only five that remain of an ancient race known as the Darkin.

I've never noticed that the Void was known for living weapons though, the Darkin and the Void are definitely connected somehow.

BLACK REALM GOD6/30/2017, 6:09:50 PM1 votes

so aatrox, varus, kayn, and... jinx?! she's pretty famine.

Disulfiram7/2/2017, 3:38:27 PM1 votes

Maybe the void might actually be famine after all: Cho is a hungry monster, Kog just wants to eat whatever, Vel hungers for knowledge, etc... that does seem to be their unifying theme.
