That awkward moment when a game that's not even out for a month...

... has more cinematic lore material and comics than a game that has been around for more than half a decade. And I'm not sure if the three stories we have (altho Bloodline felt more like a filler without any real conclusion tbh) now and a handfull of colour texts can make up for that.

Ya sure, Blizzard got the money and bigger divisons to get stuff like this done but... comon Riot, you had YEARS to deliver. The guys over at Blizz really make you look bad with that, ya know? GET YO LAZY ASS TO WORK, GODDAMIT!

cinematic lore material

Right... Those cinematics really didn't have that much lore in them you know. They were there to show off the action more than tell a story. Each one had hints to a deeper lore in the game, but nothing more.

I can't speak for the comics, as I didn't even know there were any, but just comparing the cinematics to the stories that have come out from Riot's story team I have to say Riot has more lore out.

Don't confuse the subtlety of Blizzard's story team for quantity. Players love subtlety in lore, but you're talking about quantity here.

Blizzard has had over twenty years to perfect this way of doing things, has several franchises with which to experiment with, has numerous dedicated teams for this including cinematics teams, started with story being a powerful driving force in their games since day one as opposed to just something on the side, and didn't reboot their lore half way through. Coordinate storytelling for League's a fairly new concept and they're effectively still finding their feet, especially since they're still trying to discern what the best way to actually deliver the story is.

Also said reboot isn't even done yet, so there's that too hinder things too. It's like...I dunno about sixty five - seventy percent done in terms of actual lore from what we've seen over the years, and then about a quarter done with the actual lore structure now? Something like that.

There were a bunch of projects, most of them ended up getting shut down.

When I started playing League (in August 2011), I had no idea it had lore, then when I found out, I didn't really care. Why? Because if I want a story I'll read a book or watch a movie, if I want to play a PVP game, I'll play a PVP game. It's really that simple.

When your product doesn't just sell itself (like League does), then you have to glitz it up with superfluous nonsense like Lore, cinematics, etc. Not to say that these aren't neat additions, but let's be honest... very few people play League of Legends for the lore. Note: I didn't say "no one", but I can't ever remember a time where I was in a game and someone said "did you know Katarina's story" or "hey Darius' story should is interesting!" Yep, things no one says.

RPGs are a great place for stories in games, MOBAs are a great place for PVP. Thanks.

Here's how I feel about Lore.

I play for PVP. I listen to Intelligence Squared U.S. debates while playing.

The problem isn't lore. It's how you spend your time.

Let me get this straight, you're whining cause Blizzard can make better lore. I mean, all there games have nothing but lore. I think I'll stay with the fun game rather than another boring, tired Blizzard game. Also, to be noted, Blizzard is far, far, far more corrupt than any other game company out there.

Well before Rito release lore related cinematic they probably should finish their lore rework first.

Blizzard has always been known for their love of lore and videos. (Original Starcraft comes to mind).

The way I approach these questions is...

I'm a lore nut. I LOVE learning the stories and about the world a game is set in. When it comes to MOBAs and FPS games... I just don't care. We play quick matches that last half an hour, with set characters and set abilities...

I care about my characters in an MMO / RPG where I can design what they look like. I can give them backstories and personalities. I need to know about the world so I know how my character interacts with it. In a game like LoL where you enter a lobby and get a game, then leave once victory or defeat is achieved, there's no reason to become attached to any of these characters for me. I haven't even watched a single Overwatch 'lore' video, that's how little I care. I'm just always surprised that people care so much about the lore in a game where lore doesn't really matter for gameplay.

Finally, you have to remember that Blizzard started with a game from scratch. They built it from nothing, so yeah, they were probably writing lore from the very beginning so it's cohesive. LoL was much smaller when it started- they had the basics for a world fleshed out but as I said, it's a game based on matches, so you don't really need much because MOST people don't care about anything beyond gameplay. Now that the game is much more popular, they're rewriting EVERYTHING, and trying to make it cohesive as they go. I think that's a lot of work- and maybe they're taking too long to do it, I wouldn't actually know. I don't work for Riot and can't speak officially on it.
