Candidates for: Mythology based skins
Right the votes are in from the last two weeks and coming up for today's topic (if you haven't guessed by the title yet) is mythology based skins. Afterwards from this I'll follow up with Academy next time since it came in second and then pirates/Bilgewater last to get that one out of the way.
Alright, so I feel this is going to be one of my biggest list for Candidates yet, if not ever. Mythologies have been around for quite some time and there are a great number of them from so many parts of the world. So many that I don't even think I've heard of some of them and neither have you. That leads us to somewhat of our first problem: there are way too many mythologies to actually try and get down. However, because I feel a lot of people really are only interested in the ones they do know about, we'll just stick with those. Also side note:** IF YOU HAVE A MYTHOLOGY OR CHOICES FOR CANDIDATES THAT I MISSED, PLEASE LIST AND DISCUSS THEM BELOW! THAT'S THE PURPOSE OF THIS SERIES!**
To make things clear, I'm going to be splitting these into separate sections: Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Norse, Japanese, Chinese, Celtic, with possible Babylonian if I do some more research. For each of these, I'll be looking into both gods and monsters, heroes not so much except say the Greeks as an exception but I'll still try for them. Certain champions that fill certain beats already I'll judge on my own record, meaning that if the champ already fills a certain position in these mythologies and you don't like it, that's fine, this is based off of my ideas and thoughts.
Furthermore, if there are skins or champs that are already somewhat of a reference to any of the gods or creatures, I won't be listing them as candidates. So Mystic Cass won't count for Medusa or Nasus and Renekton count towards their god references.
OK enough talk, LET'S GET INTO IT
#Greek
Arguably one of the better known mythologies out there and my personal favorite. It's what got me to being the nerd I am today and I just found it super interesting. So let's see what candidates we can come up with so far:
##Gods/Heroes
-Aphrodite: Goddess of Love, Beauty, and Desire. Two Candidates come to my mind for this.
&
. If I really had to choose, though, I feel Evelynn is the better choice, mainly because Aphrodite is depicted as pretty much naked a lot of the time and what champion is practically more naked than Eve? Plus, with the recent lore changes to Ahri she doesn't really feel like she fits that much. In fact I only listed her because I feel other people would list her because "muh prettah fox queeeen".
-Ares: God of War.
may be the obvious choice but I prefer either
or
. I feel like based off of Aatrox's old lore as this aspect of war and Darius being a grand general in the trifecta of Noxus, they feel more like aspects of war to me.
-Artemis: Goddess of the Hunt. Considering in images she used a bow, I can only think of
for this one, especially since they have a bit of a hunt mechanic to them. (plus a jungler!)
-Athena: Goddess of Wisdom.
is pretty much the only choice for this. Idk Athena did have a shield with Medusa's head on it and the only female champ that I can think of at the moment is Leona who carries a pretty damn big shield. Either this or she could represent Helios more.
-Hades: God of the Underworld. Kind of a tricky one but I feel
could work, since he can summon minions and all.
may also be a choice to basically copy the Hades from smite a bit.
-Hephaestus: God of the Forge.
. That's all that needs to be said.
-Poseidon: God of the Sea. Not that many aquatic champs and the only one that carries a trident is
. So yeah not a lot of demand on this end.
-Zeus: God of the Sky. The big guy on Olympus and yet no really a lot of people to represent him.
could do it if given more human appearance and doubled down on the lightning aspect, but that's somewhat stretching it.
-Hermes: God of Athletes. How could I almost not think of this one?
I feel could work. Hermes was, if I recall, a bit of the messenger god as well, running around the place and Rakan's ult does feel like that concept could work.
-Chronos: God of Time. This one is a bit tricky as he's confused with Zeus' dad, Cronus but they're different. As to candidates,
&
basically the only ones to fill this.
-Heracles: Hero of Ancient Greece. This one got to me a bit as I thought it was misspelled, since it was Hercules. In actuality though, Hercules is the Roman version and Heracles is the Greek version...my whole world has gone upside down. Anyways, Heracles is about strength and being a hero.
pretty much fits the bill.
-Adrestia/Nemesis/Erinyes: Goddess of Equilibrium/Goddess of Revenge/ Protectors of Justice.
. NO OTHER CHAMP I FEEL WOULD FIT THIS ROLE BETTER!
-Dionysus: God of Fertility & Wine.
-Nike: Goddess of Victory. She's basically an angel so I give this to
##Monsters
-Centaur: OK we all know by now what
is and this is redundant, but at the same time we don't have a Hecarim skin depicting him in a more non-spirit form. Almost every single one of his skins, except Arcade, depicts him as some spiritual entity. We still have yet to see him as say a classic centaur and is more human-like.
-Minotaur: Pretty much the same with
but a bit worse since there isn't that much variation you can do to him. If anything, maybe having him depicted with more distinction between his bull head and a more human toned body could do something but I doubt that would be a great skin to make. Still, I have to mention him.
-Cyclopes: This one is a bit meh to what champions could work but I feel like
could somehow be a choice. Maybe not. Idk anymore.
-Sirens: This is probably the second
skin I feel could work. She is all about using the charm to lure people away to their doom.
-Arachne: Woman turned into spider.
#Roman
Pretty much the near exact same as the Greeks but slight differences. Let's see what I can list out of this:
##Gods/Heroes
-Aurora: Goddess of the sun. Obvious
-Aura: what we know, her name means "breeze".
-Bacchus: God of wine.
-Bellona/Duellona: Goddess of War. Tricky but with new
coming, I could see it working.
could also work if we're looking at her from Smite's appearance.
-Cupid: I'm actually going to skip since we basically got him with Heartseeker Varus.
-Diana: Goddess of the moon.....
-Discordia: Goddess of Discord (also known as Eris in Greek).
or
-Hercules: Same as before.
but more Roman themed.
-Mars: God of War. See Ares
-Mercury: Messenger of the Gods. See Hermes
-Silvanus/Sylvanus: God of the Woodlands/Forests. This one gets tricky as I don't know how you'd represent this with champs like
or
. This one may have to be a pass.
-Vulcan: God of the Forge. See Hephaestus
##Monsters
Surprisingly not that many or noteworthy for skins, at least from what I've researched.
#Egyptian
Right, we kind of covered this a bit with GotS in the Candidates series, but since this is about more direct references to gods and or creatures, let's take another look (also avoiding references already like Nasus, Renekton & any skins that may already be a reference):
##Gods/Heroes
-Apophis: God of Snakes, War, Chaos.
-Bes: God of Dwarves. Idk some Yordle.
maybe
-Isis: God of Healing, Magic, Protection & Marriage.
sounds like she fits
-Khonsu: God of the Moon.
-Maahes: God of War, lion head.
##Monsters
-Sphinx: Talked about this before in the GotS discussion but I feel
could fit this
Again not that many monsters I could look up.
#Norse
OK so since this is actually taking me longer to write this all out and post, so I'm decided to cut off the post after this and make it into a two part special. Anyways let's get to the norse.
-Odin: the Allfather.
-Thor: God of Thunder.
-Tyr God of War (and sometimes Justice).
-Uller:
-Heimdall: God of Vigilance and keeper of the Rainbow Bridge (yes that is what he does).
-Hel: Goddess of the Dead, usually depicted as half-alive and half-dead.
or
-Loki: The Trickster God.
or
-Skadi: Goddess of Winter.
or
or
##Monsters/Creatures
-Fafnir: Dwarf cursed into a dragon.
is practically perfect for this, since he can represent the dwarf side of things, as well as turn into a dragon.
would also be acceptable since she already can turn into an actual dragon.
-Trolls: ....
I guess but more Norse like?
-Fenrir:
-Valkyries:
and with
as more of a Fallen Valkyrie.
-Ratatosk(r): Squirrel Messenger of the Great World Tree.
-Ymir: Father of the Frost Giants.
OK, That's all I got time to write down for now in part 1 (Jesus this is long to write). Try to expect part 2 with Japanese, Chinese, Celtic, and possibly Babylonian in part 2 sometime Sunday or early Monday I want to say.
Are there any references or ideas that I didn't list that you have ideas for? List and discuss them down below. Also I'm decided to have two voting sessions for both parts to better determine what to write about next time after Academy and Bilgewater. So if there's a series you'd like to see discussed after those two, be sure to vote on each poll as I will be tallying them both up together.
