"The Summoners were simply too powerful to allow for meaningful conflict..."

"So here's a dude who can rise an entire city and an army with sand Azir, another who's so powerful it takes the combined might of many armies to bring down Mordekaiser, a Ruined King that can cast a single spell and cause an entire island to become an undead nightmare that haunts Valoran to this day since the centuries it was created, a interdimensional being who can solve conflicts by simply stealing shit up Bard, and either Death itself or a very powerful being who fancies himself an aspect of it Kindred"

Don't get me wrong, I really like the new writing quality, but I'm hating more and more it's direction.

Between the Black Mist, the Void, the sociopolitical tensions between the two main factions, and the existence of people who can bring back powerful men back to life who proceed to usher in a new age of darkness for centuries who do it so casually it doesn't even warrant a description (the warlocks in Mordekaiser's new lore), Runeterra seems like the physical manifestation of Mr. Burns, with which I mean it's being tag-teamed by so many things that could end it as fast as you can say "Please don't kill me" that they all get stuck at the metaphorical door, keeping a very fragile balance.

Very Warhammer 40k-ish. I really like McNeill's works, just not sure this kind of thing is what LoL really needs.

It's funny, actually, because even the Summoners had things they couldn't deal with way back when. Fiddlesticks and Chogath were pretty heavily implied to only be staying "under control" just to bide time or for amusement, respectively. Hell, Nocturne was only able to be captured because he was brought into the physical world where he's REALLY not as good as he normally is. Also, y'know, LeeSin shows what happens when Summoners fuck up. Why not just... Have Summoners fuck up more instead?

Summoners usually made bargains with powerful beings or barely held them in check (Nocturne, Brand etc). There were many story ideas wasted by the removal of the IoW, like what if Chogath decided to go on a stroll.

HAHAHAHAHA, You think this is 40kish? Right, okay. Whole worlds being consumed by demons is comparable to a few nasties and gribblies from the Warp equivalent running around. A galaxy literally bathed in blood and on the verge of a real END is similar to a world that's being tag-teamed by some undead, a few mad villians and the Void, which has yet to be really expanded. But I also like McNeills work. I like how he softened the tone for League Lore a bit. I'm sure it'll ramp up as this Arc progresses though, as it should.

Do note the Void is not a considerable or even remote threat yet. Theres literally a handful of Void beings running around the world, atleast one of which doesn't care about anything outside of her territory. The Black Mist seems to be the 'biggest' threat so far, but even it seems limited in actions. It can be repelled, and it doesn't seem to travel too far from the Shadow Isles. Yet, anway.

Mordekaiser, a Ruined King that can cast a single spell and cause an entire island to become an undead nightmare

Dude.... the Ruined King is not Mordekaiser, Mordekaiser was a king... but not the Ruined King.

The Ruined King is the Lord from the ugly Twisted Treeline.

Summoners did have the power to summon people from different dimensions. However, that was something that could've been nerfed via retcons. Also as much as I dislike how they handled it, the retcons are meant to make the world about the champions, not the summoners, which the old lore tried to balance.
