Very Serious Lore Revision: Veigar Is Runeterra's Thanos

Veigar is a character we have not seen or focused on recently. Currently in the lore, he is a bit of a laugh. No one takes him seriously and, unlike in the game, in the lore he is pretty pathetic, with all his plans failing like a bad Saturday cartoon villain. However, with League recently taking a turn for the better in terms of more frequent lore and with the recent PBE preview of the Ryze event, I realized that there is a very logical path to go with Veigar. He could literally be the Thanos of League of Legends. Old Veigar was in search of powerful and likely forbidden arcane knowledge in order to cause Runeterra to bow beneath him. However, in the new lore, the most powerful sources of arcane power are World Runes. We saw what two of them could do when they were used in Icathia: they summoned the Void. Now, what would happen if you were able to acquire a whole handful of them? Enters Veigar.

Veigar's new quest/character goal is to obtain all the World Runes

This would tie in with his in-game playstyle easily when/if he is ever reworked visually, with having his infinite AP tied to acquiring World Runes. In-lore, it would allow him to finally take his place as a major villain of the cast and not just a cheap little joke with Napolean syndrome. Can he still have all his quirks and be tiny? Sure. But this would allow Veigar to really stand out as a villain and give him an enemy in Ryze. It could also give a direction to push the other Bandle City yordles in, notably Teemo. He could also be an enemy of Veigar and have his entire career focused on eliminating the menace and making sure he never acquires all of the World Runes.

What do you guys think?

Veigar collecting the Infinity Stones / World Runes.

that explains his giant gauntlet.

Even if he gets all/enough of the world runes, im sure Bard would pop out of a glory hole and save the day.

Although it would still be unrealistic to make bard an enemy of veigar , how would veigar even know who bard is unless they actually put it as acquired knowledge in his lore.

...even though he believes himself truly evil, he possesses an inner morality that leads some to question his deeper motivations... Now he seeks to end all conflict on Valoran by bringing all of the city-states to their knees, regardless of their affiliation.

He's pretty well set up to be a Thanos-like figure already, he just needs to be expanded upon and more fleshed out. Hunting for world runes makes sense. I dislike how he "believes himself truly evil" despite his goal of "ending all conflict"... Even if your methods are fucked up, someone with that goal would see themselves as being good or right in the end. Wanting to be evil for the sake of it despite having benevolent motivations seems dumb to me; either go full "mwahaha" or go full "ends justify the means". For Veigar I prefer mwahaha.

This might sound odd,but I believe it would actually make a lot of sense if Mordekaiser and Veigar were connected somehow.

I mean just think about it, we know that Yordles age very slowly and might be even ageless,so it wouldn't be a big stretch if Veigar was already alive during Mordekaisers reign and Mordekaiser is pretty much embodies everything that Veigar tries to be.

And this could actually tie in easily with Veigars original lore,in which he wants to end all conflict,as Mordekaisers reign caused different factions to put their own differences aside and to fight together against him, thus Mordekaiser was unintentionally responsible for the (at least temporary) peace among different factions, which might have inspired Veigars current quest.

If Riot decides to keep the part where Veigar was tortured by Noxus via solitary confinement, I think Veigar will already have a powerful enemy: Noxus. Ryze could still be added, but I don't think Veigar necessarily needs another enemy. That said, Ryze needs an enemy and Veigar seems like a good candidate for that? So I guess I agree with your conclusion, but disagree with the details. Overall I like the idea of Veigar trying to collect the world runes.

Also, Teemo getting a mission to take down Veigar seems like a strange lore direction to take, since based on Teemo's kit, it doesn't suggest he's meant to deal with a mage such as Veigar. Unless Veigar gets reworked into a juggernaut and actually be like Thanos lol

I liked this lore revision idea i heard before, that veigar was a minion who came into contact with some ungodly power and became a separate entity. Your lore change could work with this too, making the godly power a world rune.

Would explain why hes so resentful and no one takes him seriously. Hes a minion.

I could see him being a "megamind" kinda vilain. He wants to be evil for the hell of it but doesn't know how to.

Or he is what you say, a "thanos" extremely powerfull even tho he looks ridiculous. You WOULD laugh at him regardless, it's just that when you do he deletes you from existence without hesitation, just like in game.

I'd be happy with either of those personality, they seem to fit him. It's not like we have a "good bad guy" already.

I'd prefer it if he was a minion who, through his own hard work and deviousness, managed to transcend his minion-ness.

I’m okay with this. Make it so.
