What are the Watchers?

Originally I thought they were some sort of snowy, evil rulers because of Lissandras connection with them? (That belief dates back years at least in my head and I used to think Liss was one of them)

I know now they're not but what are they? Does Lissandra still do their bidding? Is Malzahar their lackie? Are they the siblings of Aurelion Sol? Did they create or some how have a part in the creation of the world runes?

I know we're not going to get clear answers today, but that cinematic (amazing, genius, awe-inspiring) was great in the fact it showed a Watcher but is it a god level being?? Ahhh! More questions emerge as we're given answers.

Personally I put the watchers in the same level as the targonians. They are the eldritch overlords of the Void and the Dark Ice. And they want to destroy/conquer Runeterra. Lissandra and Malzahar seem to play the same role for the watchers, some kind of priests or dark apostles of the inevitable doom of Runeterra.

Supposedly they are the rulers of the void, implied to be the most powerful void creatures.

The really strange part is however that they at some point appeared in the Freljord, gifted humans there the iceborn "ascension" and made them powerful in exchange for their servitude.

They also taught the humans how to build and create various things for them.

But then the iceborn under the leadership of Avarossa and Serylda rebelled and somehow they actually won a extended war and drove the watchers into the howling abyss.

Worth noting that the iceborn leaders survived and enough others also survived for them to have descendants scattered around and about over Freljord.

Meanwhile shurima´s sunborn ascended kept having entire armies wiped out by the inferior voidlings and their commanders.

Feels like the powerbalance here is really weird, both the sunborn and iceborn are ascended humans and yet the Iceborn casually kicked the voidlords and all their guards into a "bottomless" abyss that they could not get out from.

Then the Iceborn went and had children and civil war, like it was just another day.

Then we have Shurima in which multiple sunborn had PTSD over voidborn battles, massive deathtolls and areas that were devestated in battle.

Somehow its all really weird, why were the iceborn able to win so "easily" when the sunborn had so many problems?

That is still a big mystery..For what we know they are void beasts that are the masters of the void. And enslaved Frejlord gifted them powers and lost the battle. Got pushed of the Howling abyss... And SOMEHOW they are under the unknown lands...

The creature from the cinematic is not a Watcher, its a random voidborn.
