All evidence supporting an MMO vs All evidence against an MMO

For:

  • Immense amount of lore updates
  • A VERY suggestive trademark, suggesting a lore-based Riot games new release Legends of Runeterra
  • Ghost crawler being moved from head game-play designer to a position at Riot is head of creative development, this might not be a big deal except he states that is is seperate from League of Legends, meaning it is for a different game. HE ALSO HAS EXPERIENCE WITH MMOs.
  • Marc Merill THE CO-FOUNDER OF RIOT GAMES literally asking "Yes or No to an MMO"
  • The crazy art, stories and concepts being released pretty much every other week. Why is there such a push for lore based content? The game has no focus what-so-ever on lore apart from easter eggs in champion interactions.
  • CINEMATICS
  • The INTERACTIVE Runeterran Map
  • Probably more stuff I can't think of right now

Against:

  • rito wil nevr releece a em em oh
  • ?
  • !
  • i got nothing
  • ??

Edit: (This post most mostly a joke, however I do think there is a possibility. Whether it is an MMO or something else entirely. There is definitely some big stuff coming from Riot!)

Optimism can be a very cloudy pair of goggles.

I only see 2 points that are related to MMO, it could be any kind of game.

I know your post is mostly a joke, but I'd rather keep my expectations low for now,as the new game could be anything from an MMO to a tabletop-game. And tbh,I don't think most of your points are really that good anyway.

Not sure how that speaks for an MMO specifically. Yes MMOs are often a bit more storydriven than other onlinegames, but that doesn't mean they are the only ones.

Also they might focus so much on lore and visual designs,to make any future game consistent with the current ones.

Tbh,that title could be used for any kind of onlinegame. It could just as well be a fighting game, strategy game or even a card-game.

  • Ghost crawler being moved from head game-play designer to a position at Riot is head of creative development, this might not be a big deal except he states that is is seperate from League of Legends, meaning it is for a different game. HE ALSO HAS EXPERIENCE WITH MMOs.

This is pretty much the only point that seems valid to me,but we can't say if Ghostcrawler doesn't have experience with other genres as well or if he is willing to try something new.

That was just a few months ago,he might have done it to see how many people are really interested in a LoL-MMO or maybe just out of personal curiosity.

  • CINEMATICS

Its not like those are exclusive to MMOs you know? Heck LoL itself had some cinematics in the past,so why would an MMO change that?

Against:

Well there is the fact that the MMO-genre isn't in a good shape right now and keeping an MMO alive can be quite costly,so it'd be a huge gamble to make an MMO.

A lot of your "for" points aren't MMO specific. It could still be many other genres, imo.

You know while I get all this MMO hype people have, I'm not really "hyped" at the idea of an MMO myself. Never really got into MMOs myself, so the hype just fly over my head.

Personally, I would prefer a more single player experience while playing as the champs.

If you're gonna list the 'evidence against' like that at least put this post in the memes & games section.

For all we know it may not come until like 4 or 5 years from now as long as this game has the support of the millions of players and twitch viewers. It takes a long time to develop any game that is the scale of LoL or an MMO.

That being said, I'm not sure if all tech companies follow the same trend, filing patents and trademarks then following up on them like 3+ years later. Who knows. Samsung and Apple file patents of designs like every 6 months but never really apply them to a device until YEARS after the fact.

Well, a point against "Leagues of Runeterra" or at least their next game being an MMO is the fact that Riot bought a fighting game studio last year, who already had a working prototype for an ability cooldown based fighting game.

I think producing an alpha after a year of work on an already finished game engine isn't too far from being possible.
