Problems with Voice chat.

When i join voice chat with my friend i have trouble hearing him because i also hear all his sound effects, character sounds, abilities ect... and they are very loud and overpower the voice. How can i sort this out so i can only hear his voice? Or how can i help him if its his side that's causing the problem?
