Nocturne needs rework [Detailed]

##Point of View

I remember the days when Nocturne was viable and decently strong, well that was before all these new champions, and new reworks appeared which kinda screwed him over. Now that you have someone like Xayah who can completely dodge his ultimate with her ultimate and so on..

.

He doesn't need a rework in terms of his lore but he definitely needs a visual change and a change in his abilities, he looks fine in the splashart but he looks nothing a like in game when compared to what he looks like in his splashart. In his splashart he has this dark aura or glow what ever you want to call it around him and

His abilities are kinda simple and weak in my opinion even when they have decent AD scalings on some of them, as well as some of them don't really fit his theme/identity that is this scary demonic wrath like thing that brings darkness all around him and causes everyone to scream out of fear.

##Problems with his kit:

  • Passive: It's a good passive for waveclear that scales with AD and gives a really small amount of healing that scales with AP when procced but there could be a better replacement for this passive.

  • W: Shroud of Darkness - Just a weaker version of Sivir spellshield even with the fact that he has bonus attack speed passively, but this ability is just generally uninteresting. Not to mention it was recently nerfed to only block one ability while his shield is up.

  • E: Unspeakable Horror - The name doesn't even fit for this ability in terms of how this ability works, yes it fears a target but it requires for Nocturne to be 425 in range to select the target and not only that but it also takes 2 SECONDS before the target get's actually feared and most of the time the enemies will just dash out of range. Also the fact that this ability deals magic damage and scales with ability power just makes this ability essentially useless apart from the fact that it provides okay cc if you can get it to go off.

  • R: Paranoia - Basically Akali R but just with high range, well not that high to be honest looking at videos and reading lore in game his R seems really restricted in terms of range or even how it appears/works. I am aware that his range is higher than Caitlyn R but Lux Jhin R have a higher range than Nocturne R at rank 2.

##Other problems:

  • His abilities have really high mana costs, both of his Q and E cost 80 mana at max rank but his W costs 50 mana which is okay. But let's take a look at Kayn for example, yes he also has high mana costs for his abilities but Kayn has 200 more mana than Nocturne at level 18 and in Kayn kit he doesn't really need to use his abilities as often as nocturne does, since Kayn main ability is his Reaping Slash with the cost of 50 mana and 5 second cooldown.

  • His attack range, yes I am aware that there are many other melee champions that have 125 attack range but by looking at his kit it requires him to get close to his enemies, his W attack speed helps him in combat slightly but most of the time he won't get in range to attack someone since he can be kitted quite easily even with this Duskbringer Q movement speed buff. And if Nocturne can't basic attack enemies he is left to attack them by abilities and the problem with that is stated above.

  • His kit overall is confusing, his identity appears to be as an assassin but his kit suggests otherwise, his W can suggest that he could be a potential fighter champion because of the attack speed bonus as well as his E that requires him to be close. His Q is kinda just a simple skillshot that gives him movement speed towards enemies that are hit which is nothing that fascinating.

  • His ult is good for utility purposes in terms of enemies loosing vision, and can be used greatly in synergy with Orianna R for example but other than that it seems quite powerless, yes it can deal some damage once you get items but again this ultimate is just a simple long Akali R dash, it doesn't even have any special darkness effects like in this video...

or have this amazing idea of when Nocturne uses his ultimate ability that enemies begin to see hallucinations, and even in his lore it stated that Nocturne was the reason why people couldn't/wouldn't sleep and if they would that they would wake up screaming from fear.

Yes I know that champions don't always have to reflect on what they do in cinematic videos but this would be a step in the right direction from my point of view.

##Visual Change Suggestion

I saw this image recently that made me think that this concept would look a lot better then the current Nocturne in terms of visuals...

##Skins

The only one I am going to mention is his Eternum Nocturne skin that I own. The voice over of this skin is really good, as well as the visuals of his abilities but the glow and the overall look of Noctune himself just doesn't look as pleasing.

.

Thank you for reading who ever got this far that's all i've got to say, leave your thoughts and opinions in the comments below if you agree or disagree with some of the things that I stated and any form of feedback is appreciated.

just skimmed this. Nocturne is in a great place right now. I've been rocking a near 70% win rate with him on two accounts in gold/silver. He even saw some play in Worlds this year. His spellshield and his ult makes him an incredible ganker. I honestly think he's one of the best designed champs in the game in terms of balance/counterplay.

Nocturne is not in a great spot. his Worlds performance was because the entire team gave him farm and helped him rush level six. He had lv 6 and gnaked before Soaz even had 2 CS. His kit and CC are outdated and tons of junglers just do what he does faster, better, more consitently, the most well know of which was Pantheon.

Not really relevant, one champ has to use her ult to dodge another's... he's old yeah, but this is simple counterplay.

He doesn't need a rework in terms of his lore but he definitely needs a visual change and a change in his abilities, he looks fine in the splashart but he looks nothing a like in game when compared to what he looks like in his splashart.

Defining his narrative is one of the quickest ways to updating him, the design team the narrative team and art team working together to make sure the character is cohesive in how they are portrayed in the story and art and how that translates to in game mechanics. You said it yourself, his ult should better represent the stuff we saw him do in lore.

I doubt he'll keep his spell shield post rework, depending on the direction they take on him, he may end up with a completely different passive as well, I think he'll keep the fear, they may make so it's on par with Warwick's fear.

I do hope we see when we get a reworked Nocturne: his ability to bring people's nightmares to life, and maybe even his ability to possess people. Perhaps his new ult could be a combination of this, the first part being the hallucinations like you suggested, and the second part (his dash) he's actually flying across the map to briefly enter you and burst out.

Eternum Nocturne is an Eternum skin. And....it looks like itself? I mean it's AMAZING and it's a radically different version of a character. Obviously though of course he needs a VU on his base form and other skins, and VO update on all skins.

Gameplay isn't really supposed to be in here but.....what if his R had a dramatically shorter cool down if he didn't dash? Paranoia could make you paranoid because you don't know IF he is going to dash or not. AND you can use it to help allies across the map escape or stop a Shen R from top lane, or stop Jhin sniping.

Well, im a hard main Noct. I play him since season 1. And i agree with your comments. With new champs/items and new skills (dashes, items like stopwatch) he is pretty behind at the moment. Its true that you can play him and have a decent winrate and play good games, but, i feel that he hasnt a true identity with his skill set. He's not an assasin or OSer. He is a fighter... and i think that he needs some reworks.
