Lore expectations with Akali update?
Would we get a more detailed background into her order? A connection with Zed? A rivalry with Kayn? Will she have any connection to the spirit realm, even if it’s different from Shen?

I think they'll make her an Ascended.
Based on what we saw in Roadmap and some discussions with CoolRadius, her writer. I think we'll mainly see Akali going through like a coming of age journey narratively. She should be a lot more mature as a character but she still seems like a fairly young character so she still may make the occasional impulsive decision. It sounds like shes no longer with the Kinkou and striking out on her own all anime protagonist style. Since duality and balance are a big theme, I think she'll find herself at a crossroads between light and darkness
Personally I would've suspected at least a Zed update, since I can't imagine they're not gonna connect her in some way to him; a long time ago they hinted at such a connection (Though who knows if that's endured after 6 years). Maybe a Kennen update? A Syndra update? Depends I suppose on what they would want to do update wise. I feel like a Syndra update'd be more likely than a Kennen one, just cuz Kennen's got the whole "yordle" thing dangling over him and Riot continues to avoid that unless necessary, and if they were ever gonna update the darker Ionians lore, Akali'd probably be the easiest way of doing so.
If I'm being optimistic, I'd hope for lore updates for Kennen, Syndra and Zed, along with a short story of sorts.
Being pessimistic, I'd expect Akali to get a full bio, new colour story and that's about it.
If I'm being realistic, I'd expect Akali to get a full bio, new colour story, a cinematic like they seemingly like to do with all the VGUs now, though potentially more stylised like Irelia's, and a Zed bio update.
I'm somewhere between realistic and optimistic at present.
Since she's hinted at being involved in the hunt for Jhin in his color story, I'd like to see her be more involved in that. Jhin lost Master Kusho because Zed's an ass, so having her in on it would make it complete again. It wouldn't be the same, of course, but if she's hunting him he won't let her get away when its time for his true masterpiece to unfold.

To clarify something with everybody, they said that they would not be scrapping her current lore, but rather be adding onto it (similar to the Gangplank update).
