Digital Painting Q's for splash/fan art creators or Riot artists!

Hey OCE,

Recently I got into Digital Painting after sketching for most of my life and wow - the transition is hard as!!!!

I was wondering if a splash artist or Rioter could answer a couple of questions for me.

  1. What software do you use to create splashes besides Photoshop?
  • I ask because I've heard of people buying programs to 'smooth' lines, personally so far I'm having troubles drawing straight/nice lines since I'm not used to the surface of the tablet.
  1. Where/How did you learn to use the Tablet/Photoshop?
  • I am learning the photoshop shortcuts by practice but learning how to mask and when to create layers is a lot harder.

Thanks guys! BTW check out Kienan's new Ahri splash he made: http://knockwurst.deviantart.com/art/AHRI-League-of-Legends-Fan-Splash-517882502 Mango

First thing, are you solid enough in your traditional fundamentals to transition to a tablet? If you're at all deficient in those skills then you'll have an even more painful of a time. Got any examples of your work?

Second, I got my first one back in like 2005, but I could only paint with it, I wasn't able to do line art which was more up my alley. I had to draw out line art and paint under that. Since 2008 though I've worked in Cintiqs which have been a must-have for line guys like me. That'll allow a one-to-one transition, but at a $2000+ pricetag, it's only worth it if you have the traditional skills locked down. Which points back to the first thing above.
