Does anyone else feel a bit disappointed by the lack of Miss Fortune in Burning Tides?
In concept, Bilgewater: Burning Tides is Sarah Fortune's story. This is the tale of how she used Twisted Fate and Graves to trick Gangplank into lowering his guard so that she might have her vengeance and bring first him and then 'his' Bilgewater to an end.
It doesn't exactly feel that way.
Miss Fortune appears in two of Burning Tides' twelve Parts and has ten lines of dialogue total, and even her attack on Gangplank is something that takes place off-stage for all intents and purposes. Her motivations have to be spelled out within her two scenes, with the latter summarising her entire backstory, because we honestly aren't given a whole lot of time to get to know her character. What makes it all the more irritating is that Burning Tides isn't exactly the best piece to use to interpret her character in the new lore. Once you move beyond the façade that is her in-game portrayal, we aren't left with a whole lot more than hate, purpose and emptiness - a good prospect for Kalista.
I feel as though Graves and TF got a fantastic showing from this event, Gangplank (RIP) certainly got to display his new character quite well but Miss Fortune ... she seemed at once very important and an afterthought. Her revenge is what drives this event and yet she's a second-stringer in the story whose moment of triumph is only addressed through exposition and glimpses of fire. It doesn't really feel right to me.
After her appearance in the second act I was really looking forward to seeing MF's moment in the spotlight, but instead we cut straight to the dying light of the afterparty with all the excitement behind us. I honestly found myself more than a little disappointed, as good as the story has been on the whole. I feel like you could have pretty much removed her Parts from the story, subbing in a little exposition to explain that she took out GP, and things wouldn't have been massively different once her new bio filled in the gaps.
Anyone else feel the same?
