We've drafted some faction-specific Champion rosters for the Factions game mode. How did we do?
As part of the "Factions" community game mode, built around matches such as "Noxus versus Ionia", we attempted to assemble rosters for major Valoranian factions. They are linked here. We've done a lot of internal review, but we'd like to also get some outside perspectives, particularly with how reasonable these lists appear from a Riot lore standpoint. I figured this board was the right place to go for a lore consult.
To explain the three categories of Champions we use:
- Core Champions are Champions so closely linked to the faction that their absence would be strange. Factions generally begin a Factions competition with their full Core roster in play. An example would be Darius for Noxus or Teemo for Bandle City.
- Secondary Champions are Champions who fit well with the faction, but may not have an overwhelming lore connection. Their absence is not necessarily that strange, but their presence is unobjectionable. Factions recruit their Secondary Champions one by one as the storyline progresses; Summoners pledged to each faction vote every two weeks on which Champion they want to add next. One example would be Ahri for Ionia: she's clearly "Ionian" with her "Fantasy Asia" theme, and she does canonically reside in Ionia, but she's also not defined by her commitment to the Ionian cause or anything.
- Tertiary Champions are Champions with a tenuous connection to the faction, whose presence is odd but acceptably so. These are "curveball" or "twist" Champions who add a little something extra to the roster. Each faction can recruit one or two of these Champions at the end of an arc. An example would be Singed for Noxus: he has a tenuous lore relationship through the Ionian conflict(s), and he's quite villainous, but he's not really a classic "Noxian", and some effort would need to be made to explain his recruitment.
Of course, most Champions have rather ambiguous loyalties. Many rosters are inevitably full of people who hate each other—but who might well both have a stake in the choices made by a given faction. The idea is not to create Super Friendship Teams of likeminded individuals, unless I suppose we're talking about Demacia, but rather to create rosters that "feel" appropriate for each faction, and that mostly align with public expectations.
Traditionally, we look at three main criteria:
- Story refers to written lore, voiceover lines, and so on. This is obviously important. But League is a game, not a book series, and we don't think the inquiry should stop here.
- Theme (sometimes Feel) refers to the Champion's overall tone and aesthetic. For example, if you show me a knight in shining armor, even if their lore is about them being "from spaaaaaaaace" and doesn't mention any particular faction, I'll be inclined to suggest they might be Secondary or Tertiary for Demacia. (The more common combination for a Secondary would be a powerful thematic overlap and a minor but plausible Story link.)
- Gameplay acknowledges the fact that, at the end of the day, we're trying to come up with rosters that make for fun matches. Sometimes, we'll nudge Champions around to fill in a massive roster gap. The limited rosters of Factions do present interesting strategic puzzles, and do give each faction distinctive strengths and weaknesses, and that's great, but we have to draw the line somewhere. Another example of a gameplay rationale would be that we like to have at least a couple low-IP, "accessible" Champions on each roster.
Again, the analysis is ultimately rather subjective, but these criteria do help guide the process.
for the Void because he feels like he has some sort of connection with Malz in the way they operate doesn't strike me as a very Aatrox thing. It feels totally out of character for Aatrox to side with someone because of kinship or true allegiance, and I sincerely doubt he'd get invested in the Void considering he's been pretty much Runeterran focused in his actions. Maybe I'm wrong but this connection feels like a big stretch. I would've personally had Aatrox as a wildcard champion because of his history; he'll fight for whichever nation he sees fit, so any nation might see him drop by.
didn't get magical powers from Zaun in the lore anymore; he learned them from his home among the riverfolk of the Serpentine. I don't know what canon you guys are going with so I might be ignorant to you guys just saying "we're sticking to the old stuff for TF", but seeing this makes me go "er..."
being a secondary for the Shadow Isles feels like a huge contradiction of his character, given how much he supports the natural way of things. I'd have thought he'd die before he served the dread cause of the Shadow Isles. Hell I feel like you could tie him in with Bilgewater as a secondary/tertiary champion considering the Harrowings and his desire to restore the Isles; some active fighting against them might be more up his alley.
