We've drafted some faction-specific Champion rosters for the Factions game mode. How did we do?

Arc VIII Rosters Discussion-Speak up now!

As part of the "Factions" community game mode, built around matches such as "Noxus versus Ionia", we attempted to assemble rosters for major Valoranian factions. They are linked here. We've done a lot of internal review, but we'd like to also get some outside perspectives, particularly with how reasonable these lists appear from a Riot lore standpoint. I figured this board was the right place to go for a lore consult.

To explain the three categories of Champions we use:

  • Core Champions are Champions so closely linked to the faction that their absence would be strange. Factions generally begin a Factions competition with their full Core roster in play. An example would be Darius for Noxus or Teemo for Bandle City.
  • Secondary Champions are Champions who fit well with the faction, but may not have an overwhelming lore connection. Their absence is not necessarily that strange, but their presence is unobjectionable. Factions recruit their Secondary Champions one by one as the storyline progresses; Summoners pledged to each faction vote every two weeks on which Champion they want to add next. One example would be Ahri for Ionia: she's clearly "Ionian" with her "Fantasy Asia" theme, and she does canonically reside in Ionia, but she's also not defined by her commitment to the Ionian cause or anything.
  • Tertiary Champions are Champions with a tenuous connection to the faction, whose presence is odd but acceptably so. These are "curveball" or "twist" Champions who add a little something extra to the roster. Each faction can recruit one or two of these Champions at the end of an arc. An example would be Singed for Noxus: he has a tenuous lore relationship through the Ionian conflict(s), and he's quite villainous, but he's not really a classic "Noxian", and some effort would need to be made to explain his recruitment.

Of course, most Champions have rather ambiguous loyalties. Many rosters are inevitably full of people who hate each other—but who might well both have a stake in the choices made by a given faction. The idea is not to create Super Friendship Teams of likeminded individuals, unless I suppose we're talking about Demacia, but rather to create rosters that "feel" appropriate for each faction, and that mostly align with public expectations.

Traditionally, we look at three main criteria:

  • Story refers to written lore, voiceover lines, and so on. This is obviously important. But League is a game, not a book series, and we don't think the inquiry should stop here.
  • Theme (sometimes Feel) refers to the Champion's overall tone and aesthetic. For example, if you show me a knight in shining armor, even if their lore is about them being "from spaaaaaaaace" and doesn't mention any particular faction, I'll be inclined to suggest they might be Secondary or Tertiary for Demacia. (The more common combination for a Secondary would be a powerful thematic overlap and a minor but plausible Story link.)
  • Gameplay acknowledges the fact that, at the end of the day, we're trying to come up with rosters that make for fun matches. Sometimes, we'll nudge Champions around to fill in a massive roster gap. The limited rosters of Factions do present interesting strategic puzzles, and do give each faction distinctive strengths and weaknesses, and that's great, but we have to draw the line somewhere. Another example of a gameplay rationale would be that we like to have at least a couple low-IP, "accessible" Champions on each roster.

Again, the analysis is ultimately rather subjective, but these criteria do help guide the process.

I would remove Varus from the Void secondary. His corruption as of to date has nothing at all to do with the Void or it's powers. For all we know it could be the remnants of an evil, powerful Ionian mage who was condemed to have his spirit imprisoned there. Even then, his lore is considered out-dated and technically non-canon since the retcon.

On top of this, the whole reason for Varus' state of appearance is because of Noxus. He has no claim for world destruction, or the clambering of supreme power. He just wants his revenge before he runs out of time. Everything you see on him, such as his Piercing Arrow, his Blight, his Chains of Corruption, are in effect the result of the corruption acting as Varus' weapon itself, or vice versa, using Varus as the weapon.

off-topic: I now have probably the most ludicrous head canon lore for Varus right now.

I always knew that Nicholas Cage was from Targon

Also: I would put Brand in the Freljord Team / Bilgewater Team

Because Brand is a fire spirit thing that was frozen in Freljord and Kegan (the human body) is a pirate from Bilgewater.

And Veigar could be in the Targon team... because all the guys in the Targon Team have a conection with the space and Veigar has also a conection with the cosmos.

So I'm not interested in factions really and I don't wanna come across as an arse or anything, but I have a couple of individual problems with the champions and who you've got them repping for:

Aatrox for the Void because he feels like he has some sort of connection with Malz in the way they operate doesn't strike me as a very Aatrox thing. It feels totally out of character for Aatrox to side with someone because of kinship or true allegiance, and I sincerely doubt he'd get invested in the Void considering he's been pretty much Runeterran focused in his actions. Maybe I'm wrong but this connection feels like a big stretch. I would've personally had Aatrox as a wildcard champion because of his history; he'll fight for whichever nation he sees fit, so any nation might see him drop by.

TwistedFate didn't get magical powers from Zaun in the lore anymore; he learned them from his home among the riverfolk of the Serpentine. I don't know what canon you guys are going with so I might be ignorant to you guys just saying "we're sticking to the old stuff for TF", but seeing this makes me go "er..."

Maokai being a secondary for the Shadow Isles feels like a huge contradiction of his character, given how much he supports the natural way of things. I'd have thought he'd die before he served the dread cause of the Shadow Isles. Hell I feel like you could tie him in with Bilgewater as a secondary/tertiary champion considering the Harrowings and his desire to restore the Isles; some active fighting against them might be more up his alley.

Just a few minor grips I had with the selection. Might not mean anything to anyone, but if you're looking for some constructive criticism (I hope this is constructive) here's my two cents.

Thoughts:

Bandle City - Move Corki to secondary, as he lives in Piltover with Heimer and Ziggs. Move Lulu to secondary because she's technically independent anyways, and move Veigar to tertiary because he's technically a criminal in Bandle City. Move Gnar down to tertiary because his only relation to Bandle is that he's a prehistoric yordle.

Bilgewater - Where'd you get the bit about Jax liking Nami and Diana working with Nami? I feel like Nami should be moved to secondary, as she's not technically from Bilgewater but is linked through Fizz.

Demacia - You'd be surprised how few people know Lucian is Demacian :p Poppy should probably be bumped up to primary, and Kayle should be upped to secondary.

Freljord - Olaf should be primary, as he directly serves Sejuani.

Ionia - I think Varus should be tertiary, for reasons similar to Syndra and Zed.

Noxus - Riven should be tertiary, Vladimir primary. I'm not sure that Elise is actually supposed to be a member of the Black Rose, but it is implied she originally came from Noxus, given she's friends with both Leblanc and Vladimir.

Shadow Isles - Maokai should be tertiary.

Shurima - I wouldn't be surprised if Malzahar's lore is going to be changed later, but either way I don't believe the person he used to be exists anymore. He probably wouldn't care if Shurima was destroyed. Cassio should probably be bumped to secondary, as she's in league with Xerath's camp. Uristan isn't the same location as Shurima, I don't think Zilean is connected to Shurima.

The Void - I kinda think you're reaching with Varus, Aatrox, Syndra, and Veigar. Fiddles would probably make a decent secondary.

Zaun - TF's connection to Zaun is outdated lore. Janna abandoned her home and is allied with Piltover now.

Mount Targon - I don't agree with most of these tbh :p Probably just stick to Diana, Leona, Panth, Sol, and Taric.

Sona is not mentioned at all with the Ionia faction but I believe she grew up there, which would put her at secondary i guess?

I am curious about a few of your faction assignments here and have made a few comments below. Please note that I'm simply speaking from a lore standpoint and not balance, so if you've got a champion assigned as primary because the faction needed it, you can disregard my statements.

  • Vayne is listed as a Demacian primary, but seems a lot closer to Lucian in her views of the city-state. Sure, she lives there and has a mansion and everything, but I'm doubtful she'd be the first one to respond to a call to arms.
  • Twisted Fate is about as loyal to Bilgewater as Graves is, so how come he's only listed as a secondary while Graves is primary? Especially in the wake of the Burning Tides event, I'd include him in their starting roster. At any rate, I'd certainly remove him from Zaun's starting roster, since his Zaun origins were retconned.
  • Varus isn't loyal to Ionia so much as he hates Noxus. I think he'd be better as a secondary champion for their roster.
  • I'd move Singed and Warwick down to tertiary for the Noxus faction. They're mercenaries more than anything, and while they have close ties to Noxus through their city-state's alliance, it feels weird that they'd be available to play for Noxus so frequently.
  • I could see an argument be made for Vladimir to be a primary Noxian champion. Sure, he's mostly doing his own thing, but he was brought back to Noxus and had his crimes forgiven specifically so he could fight for them on the Fields of Justice. I wouldn't blink twice at seeing him listed as primary.
  • Noxus has a lot of tertiary champions, some of which feel a little forced. Thresh and Hecarim are the biggest two offenders, but Twitch and Viktor are also odd choices, given that neither really looks out for anything besides themselves. Mordekaiser can and should stay - after all, Noxus is his former capital city - but the others have tenuous connections to Noxus at best.
  • I'm interested as to why Orianna isn't a primary Piltover champion. She was created to be a replica of her creator's daughter, but she also has the VO line "yes, I am a weapon," implying that there's more she was designed to do. Ori was literally built to be a champion for Piltover, so I certainly would've expected to see her as a primary champion.
  • Blitzcrank has a very loose affiliation with Piltover based on thematics and nothing else. If he'd have been built in Piltover, he likely would not have been declared sentient and could have faced a life of menial drudgery in the employ of some scientist. I'd remove him from Piltover's list, unless they need additional supports/tanks for their roster.
  • With the retcons, Mordekaiser could probably be moved down to a secondary for the Shadow Isles. He's using their power, but isn't really interested in the overall agenda of the Isles.
  • I'd almost fold the Void in with the Shadow Isles entirely and just make them their own faction, since both are relatively small.
  • Pantheon feels like a REALLY strange fit for Shurima, but I'm assuming it has to do with play balancing and nothing lore-based :P
  • Obviously newer champions still need to be placed on the list. Tahm Kench is an obvious candidate for Bilgewater (fits the nautical theme, has a potential deal with Miss Fortune), but given his crossroads-demon status I could see him as a tertiary champ for the Shadow Isles or something similar. Illaoi is either a Bilgewater primary or secondary. Ekko is a Zaun primary - he fights for the Zaun that could be. Jhin is an Ionian tertiary since he exists in a similar place as Zed and Syndra. I could see an argument be made for him to be tertiary in the Shadow Isles as well.

Just looked over the roster, looks pretty solid. May I ask what exactly this is and how I may participate?

While it pains me immensely that Targon went from Team Martial Glory to Team Astral Weirdos I do think you have them pretty well. Though if we're going the overpowered nigh immortal route for their team I'm a little curious why you have Alistar with them but not a champ like Aatrox the link with everyone else on the team.

Good work overall though

I'll have to agree with the issues of Maokai being teamed with the Shadow Isles. He'd be better off in Ionia, or Bilgewater, or anywhere that isn't the Shadow Isles.

Also, I am really not sure about the Void. Varus could plausibly be infected by the Void, but Syndra and Aatrox don't really fit in at all. Shaco and Veigar just barely, and even then I doubt Veigar would join them. It's all purple.

For replacements, I don't know, but perhaps Renekton (and maybe Xerath too) went insane because of Void-based influence, the same ones that possessed Malzahar? Speaking of purple, if Veigar is a candidate, Lulu could be too.

And a rather off-the-chain idea could be that the god Illaoi preaches to could either be or be influenced by the Void. She only ever has negative conversations with Rek'Sai, but Rek'Sai is a mindless idiot. What stupid god created an endlessly moving monster that does nothing but seek to fulfill its goals? The same one Illaoi worships.
