#2018 Lore Tournament: Day 14

Today's stories focus on different fallen peoples. One is plagued by its former gods, having since turned desperate and violent, with its only possible savior seeming to be cruelty and tricks. The other is trapped under the weight of an ancient curse, but even the most terrible of curses can be lifted with the lightness of hope.

Twilight of the Gods by Graham McNeill Azir has fallen. Shurima is crumbling. Too many of the remaining Ascended have been scarred and corrupted by the Void, and have become Darkin. The panther Ta'anari, one such Darkin, speaks with Myisha, the former Aspect of Twilight, about what must be done to stop the violence. Little does Ta'anari know that Myisha has more in mind than simply stopping the corrupted Darkin...

Stone Cold by David Slagle Nunu and Willump follow the heart-song of Nunu's mother Layka, to a village that has been turned to stone. The ancient Willump knows that this village's curse is heavy, and few things can lift it. However, Nunu shows that there is nothing lighter to lift a great weight than a child's hope.

[EDIT] Voting is finished. Yesterday's poll was close, this one... not so much. Twilight of the Gods wins with 41 to 10 votes.

Easy.

Twilight of the Gods: Darkin Retcon? Lazy. Depiction of the Darkin? Just angry Ascended. Myisha? Total jerk who is unlikable in every way. Interesting things: Ta'anari's struggle and the conversations between the Ascended.

Stone Cold: Adorable Nunu, wise Willump, beautiful message, everything works.

You know what I chose.

One thing a people complain about in TotG is the so called "purple prose" which is apparently unnecessarily pretty paragraphs that serve no major purpose.

But in my opinion this is part of what makes this story cool, it HAS to sound grand in order to prepare the reader something epic is about to happen (i.e. literal gods at war with each other).

Stuff like:

The city and the bones of its people had long ago become one with the desert, and it was impossible to tell ash and bone from sand. Only its tallest towers remained above the dunes: broken spires that sang mournfully when the winds blew from the realms beyond the mountain. Upon a broken plinth stood two trunkless legs of stone, the cruel visage of a half-buried avian head lying in the sand beside them.

is pure hype and sets the mood just right.

Ta'anari was a very interesting character and had some very interesting things to say that brought together what was before a kind of confused depiction of the Darkin/Ascended after the fall of Shurima. That story gave a lot of body to the Darkin's fall, and while I think the ending was too abrupt, I think it has to win over Nunu. Sorry Nunu, the statues are still there T.T

With the last of his strength, Ta’anari rammed the Chalicar down into the crystalline floor of the amphitheater. The sound was deafening, like a hammerblow against the veil of the world. The cracks from its impact spread farther than they should have, and the clear sky burned with the diamond brilliance of a newborn star.

But this was no golden radiance. This was cold, merciless and silver.

“What the sun made, the moon will unmake!” screamed Ta’anari.

And a blazing column of white fire stabbed from the midnight sky.
