Small addition to the Darkin - Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse theory

Blood Magicks·12/6/2017, 12:41:01 AM·17 votes·2,447 views

Short summary of the fan theory: The remaining Darkin are meant to be a reference to the Four Horsemen. The ones we have so far fit the bill:

Aatrox - Represents War, carries a sword.

Kayn - Represents Death, carries a scythe.

Varus - Represents Conquest/Pestilence, carries a bow.

There are weak points in that theory, namely:

  • There are 5 Darkin but 4 Horsemen. How will this work out?

  • Varus' story involves conquest, he gets released during Noxian conquest and goes on to reclaim his rule over mortals. But other than that he is more about corruption than pestilence and seems to lack the blood magic that is innate to Rhaast and Aatrox.

So my theory is:

  • Varus has a very close relationship with the female Darkin he refers to as his "sister". They might be actual siblings or a very good team.

  • This is why they represent the same horseman: Varus is Conquest and the Sister is Pestilence

  • They will also be a very viable botlane duo, meant to work together and as one, so he makes up for her lack of damage and she makes up for his lack of sustain/blood magic (I mean why did he go looking for her so soon after escaping, she must be very important to his plans)(I mean in his place I would go looking for Rhaast, he's also in Ionia and seems like a fun guy to be with if you're not mortal. Oh and he needs help dealing with that pesky edgy kid.)

  • This overlap raises a question about her weapon: will she bear a weapon similar to Varus or no weapon at all? Is she free or is she imprisoned in something that is primarily not used for fighting (e.g. a ring)?

Compare that to my previous thread about Lilith, especially this comment. This theory just makes it more sensible since it is only natural she (Pestilence) taught the Crimson Reaper how to invoke the Hemoplague.

PS My deepest thanks to Riot for giving me the opportunity to theorize about this. Nothing feels as good as being part of a living fandom.

I'm like pretty, pretty sure some Riotler mentioned that the Darkin are NOT linked to the 4 Horseman of the Apocalypse. Gimme me a few hours and I will find my source.

(Edit: 3 hours later and I found nothing. If I ever find the statment, I will add it as well)

Anyway - we shouldn't forgot that Varus kit was created before Riot introduced the Darkins, so of course his kit doesn't represent a typical Darkin. Rhaast in contrast was created to be a typical Darkin including his sustain through blood magic. (Which makes me wonder - why would share an invading race their magic with humanity?)

I agree with you, that Varus' sister is probably his blood-related sister (... wait), since the russian translation used a diminutive form for the word sister, which let me assume he refers her as his little sister and not just as his kin. All these Darkin Support theories... I wanna have her as champion and play her. Also, we do have a handful of siblings in League, but none as ADC-Support pair. RITO PLS.

There is a few reason why Varus was looking for our unnamed Darkin instead Rhaast. First - Timeline. I'm not 100% sure, but the creation of Varus seems to be a consequence of the Noxus Invasion, Kayn finds Rhaast in our "current" timeline, when the Noxian Invasion is already over. I would guess it atleast 5-7 year time difference between the comics and the Kayn color text? THE THING IS THAT THE TIMELINE IS INCONSISTENT. Taliyah's lore let us assume the Noxian Invasion was still ongoing, since she should murder a village in Ionia. As far I'm aware the period of time between "A bird and the branch" and "Bloodline" is only one, two years. So lets say the resurrection of Azir has been one year from the currently timeline. That would still mean the time difference between the comics and Varus' color text would be a few years. It doesn't makes sense. Especially, since personally would assume the creation of Varus was at the beginning of the Noxian Invasion. Considere we do have a timeline, it only makes even less sense now. Second - Varus doesn't know where the 4 other remaining Darkins are. This is misconception I see on the boards. Varus has probably been captured in Shurima, so of course he would look for clues there. He is looking for places with immense, ancient magic. As far we are aware the tomb was probably the place where Brand has been held and the Darkin War has been after the fall of Shurima. His sister was never in that place to begin with. I also think, that the Darkin weapons are hidden all other Runeterra. Even if Ionia is big, there won't be a second Darkin weapon. Rhaast was found in Noxus, not Ionia anyway.

I'm a firm believer that she will use an athame of reasons you stated in your Lilith post. Will she be our next supporter? I don't know, but we can hope.

She could probably be a support/mage using 2 whips, shaped into snakes ? lol

I remember in the Varus lore that he saw a destroyed snake statue who was the guardian of the tomb which his sister was imprisoned in. ( In the same way Cassiopeia caused the destruction of the snake statue and was transformed into a gorgon)

But seriously, I can imagine a female mage using ranged whips and can catch 2 enemies at the same time, being really squishy and vulnerable, she will heal herself and her ADC each time she lash an enemy with her whips, a blood bar will fill, just as Vlad's one, and will maybe have the ability to poison enemies ?

Riot wanted for a long time to make a manaless support, and I think it's the best opportunity !

I know many people disapprove of the whole Horsemen theory, but I personally love it.

I am just a perfectionist and OCD kind of person, so in my theory there are 5 Darkins as we know, but 4 of them are Horsemen (Aatrox/War/Top, Rhaast/Death/Jungle, X/Apocalypse/Middle, Varus/Pestilence/Marksman and X/Famine/Support), as you can see, there is "Apocalypse" himself, or the most powerful Darkin of them all in the middle, which is quite fitting, because he has 2 on his right (jungle and top) and 2 on his left (marksman and support).

Just continuing what we discussed in your previous post: What makes you believe that Varus and his sister are going to represent the same horseman based on them being siblings, even thoughRhaast refers to Aatrox as his brother and represents a different horseman?

You say it might be figuratively in their case, but the same could be said about Varus and his sister.

So basically we have 2 pairs of darkin where one refers to the other as a sibling, but you say that this is meaningful in one case, but not in the other without any backup.

I'm curious as to whether the other Darkin are with Varus. Aatrox molded Tryndamere into what he is, so he doesn't necessarily want to end all of humanity, Rhaast wants to kill all the humans, but Rhaast wants to kill everything. That shows more of a neutral view of humanity. That could be why Varus went for his sister first, instead of joining up with the Darkin who's been out the longest, or helping another Darkin overcome his host. Additionally, I wonder if Aatrox gave humanity Blood Magic. Of the Darkin we know about, he is the least malicious towards humanity, enjoys starting conflicts, and demonstrates a mastery of Blood Magic, more than Rhaast does.

The comment that you linked there: "has sharp claws..." Vlad? I will post my comment on the original page here and fix some parts so it fits the discussion. I always thought of the female Darkin as the Darkin Scale (or the crown. You know, the Darkin "Queen"), representing famine or conquest. In this case (when you think of Lilith), it will be famine, a Darkin succubus and a powerful being who started blood magic for a price. This can be a pretty interesting concept to explore (skillset will probably be something similar to Kalista, but with a bloodborne pact mechanic; support mage/midlane mage, like Zyra, Lux, or Morgana?), as it is confirmed now that the Darkin can both radically transform bodies or corrupt them slowly until it is ripe to consume them. More Pop culture references: just thought of this, but Lilith in Evangelion also sheds blood, the "soup of life" (which becomes LCL). Maybe her blood is filled with magical powers, but she asks for a price for her power? Side note: I felt a strong resemblance of WoW and the story behind Sunwell and the High Elves/Blood Elves for the lore about the Darkin War (out-of-this-world beings who craved wild magic || the Burning Legion trying to use the magical powers of the Sunwell). Maybe Vlad is very thirsty (begone thot) for Lilith's blood (just like how Blood Elves suffer from magical addiction).

Shouldn't Varus be the pestilence, since he spreads "blight"? Who would be the remaining two then? Famine and Conquest (since pestilence and conquest are same qualities but are often separated into 2 different ones)?

What if Morgana (viable support) is the Darkin sister and the "apocalypse" in question is the war building between Morgana and Kayle's worlds? I think this would be a good way to add their lore's into the mix as a whole. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

For some reason I get the idea that maybe Varus might have a twin Darkin sister, which could potentially explain why there wasn't 4 originally.

VelvetCrotch12/8/2017, 9:43:54 AM1 votes

i thought already about this opportunity and the relation to the horseman.

but you explained it much more detailed and thoughtful.

i hope she will be a champion too! my idea for her look is kinda this direction:

By the way I remembered of this poll character from the fighting video game Skullgirls !

A demonic night huntress, using a whip ! And this whip is called PAZUZU

Which perfectly illustrates my thoughts

Another possible way to get five is to split Death and Hades, as they're both distinctly mentioned in the passage relating to the horsemen.

Tesla Effect12/6/2017, 9:34:45 AM1 votes

5th Darkin is the leader above the 4 Horseman.

No, this theory wont work anymore.
