What Is Sylas' Magic?

So, every mage has their own kind of magic, Lux manipulates light, Taliyah stone, Ryze arcane, and so on. However, it isn't exactly clear what Sylas' "magic" is.

To me, it seems that his magic is the ability to manipulate other mage's magic. This could be taken to whole other level. Perhaps he manipulates, not just magic, but energy, including more mundane things such as kinetic energy. Maybe he transmutes magic, being able to transfer it from one form to another, as well as being able to manipulate it in it's raw form.

On an unrelated note, for somebody who's supposedly all about mage freedom and rights and whatnot, his in-game kit doesn't exactly scream mage. All his abilities, aside from his ultimate, involve the control and usage of his chains. Is he keeping them as an accessory, or can he simply not take them off?

Well, his Biography and his teaser story - Demacian Heart, describe his most outstanding magical trait as akin to truesight/magic detection, though it also states that he was unwittingly a decent conduit for magic.

From Sylas' Biography: Noting the boy’s curious ability to sense magic, they used Sylas to identify other mages living among the citizenry.

...he accidentally brushed against her skin. The girl’s magic rushed through Sylas’s body—but rather than killing him, it shot forth from his hands in raw, uncontrolled bursts. It was a talent he did not know he possessed, and it resulted in the deaths of three people, including his mageseeker mentor.

Also worth noting is that, apparently, Sylas was particularly adept with magic, having taught Lux quite a bit during their contact in the prison.

Even with his shackles, Sylas recognized her as a singularly powerful mage, and over time the two forged an unusual and secretive bond. In exchange for Sylas’ knowledge of the control of magic...

So, between having magic detection, a natural affinity for magic, and the ability to serve as a conduit for the magic of others, he's got a fair repertoire of abilities at play.

It could probably be that he can't take them off, but IMO, it's all the more likely that he keeps his shackles on as both a powerful weapon and a symbol for his rebellion. Since they're made of petricite, and he knows how to store and channel magics through them, he has a reliable and powerful weapon to use - everyone else's magic.

And, as a rebellion's symbol, you can't get much more inspiring than a man tearing down oppressors with the chains used to bind them.

No one said that natural born mages have to center on a single element/ability,its possible that we only get those mages because they tend to be the most powerful(and thus worthy to be considered a champion).

After all it is often better to be an expert in a specific art instead of being a master of none.

That being said, you could see his element as pure magic itself, hence why he is able to see magic that radiates from other mages and why he can copy the magic of others.

I think Sylas' magic is to say the magic of control? If that makes sense? He doesn't have tremendous power on his own but his magic is adept at controlling magical energy. He functions like a magical battery and siphon able to absorb and store the magic of others, which is how he's able to detect other mages and steal their powers for himself. It also explains his natural affinity for Petricite, it's literally him in stone form, able to absorb and store magic. I think he keeps his chains because they likely have a lot of magic stored in them since in his teaser art you can see the chains connect to a massive block of petricite above his cell, so my guess is that the Mageseekrs built their entire compound out of petricite and thus the whole building kinda acted as a magic battery. Sylas' chains contained a portion of that power so he keeps them since they're a constant source of magic for him to manipulate.

Sylas is less of a mage and more a manipulator of magic energies, he doesn't use any formal magic systems or formulas to control his powers, using the chains as just an extension and an external battery pack for his powers. Lux likely needs her wand to properly channel her powers and thus adheres to a specific school of magic or teaching system, same with Ryze and even Vlad who (least in his old lore) learned hemomancy from an old hemomancer indicating it was once a school of magic. Sylas is in a way more like a Vastaya, he lets the magic do what it wants and just kinda guides it where he needs
