Why Aatrox was dark and mysterious, and why it no longer fits

Aatrox was the first of a species they hadn't written into the story yet. It wasn't that they wanted us not to know who the Darkin were, it's simply that they hadn't actually written that yet. If they had any firm ideas, they were scrapped. So he was released with the necessary lack-of-character in his character to fit that.

But now, they're giving him and the Darkin solid connections to the Targonians, Gods, and the Void. With their place in the universe set firm, he can be written as the crazed, trapped, revenge-bent slaughterer of gods and men that he always was intended to be. His new voice actually fits the theme of a man/demon who can swing once and take out a platoon and enjoys doing it. His old one didn't even in the slightest-- particularly in regards to his relation to Tryndamere. The old voice would be better suited to the kind of mage who controls the emotions and minds of his enemies from the backline or off the battlefield entirely, not anyone who carries a sword and dives into the thick of things.

Not sure why there are suddenly so many people who supposedly liked not being given any insight into the character's personality or story via the VO, when his play rate was sitting near the bottom for years. Seems to me they just like complaining about change.

He was supposed to be a primal evil which is why his voice lines sounded so old.

He's the mystery guy that shows up behind your back while you're looking at maps on a table in a military tent and he whispers into your ear, "do it, they deserved their graves". and thus the war starts.

He's the guy who shows up when a bunch of misfit fighters are getting their asses handed to them and shows them how to fight. And then shows them how to go beyond that.

That's what his lore was, a warmonger. His voicework was all built to encourage this, everything he says promotes fighting for the sake of fighting. part of what makes him a monster is when he turns ordinary men into monsters as well.

And best of all, it's unique. No other champ does this, it's like the varus pre-retcon where the lore he had was actually unique, well written and gives him a cool identity that no other video game ever had (which makes league itself a unique game). and then they changed into something generic, something that I could find in mobile legends (or some other league knockoff).

This new version, he's russian so I guess he's technically brothers with Viktor now, or perhaps riot is trying to imply that russians=ancient evil. What makes him unique now is he can kill gods, except for the part where his lore establishes that all darkin can kill gods, so that technically the one unique thing he does isn't actually unique cause there's at least 2 other champs in the roster that do that. And what he says now just sounds extremely cartoonish and basic, he's not a threat, and he clearly never has been with his new voicework.

He had a personality, anyone who listens to new special interactions can see that it's a completely different guy. Regardless of the meta reasons for making old Aatrox contemplative and calm, it is narrative's job to carry that over when fleshing it out for a rework. This wasn't deepening what was already there, it was a transformation. Why do people think that a quiet, confident, cold attitude is NO personality?

People wanted Aatrox to be reworked, Improved, not entirely changed for something they didn't ask for. And you don't understand why people are complaining? He is just another angry shouting character amongst the others now Chogath Darius Brand Gangplank Kalista Kayn Kled Mordekaiser Olaf Pantheon Renekton Rengar Sion Tryndamere Urgot Veigar Warwick

He is nowhere where he used to be. He wasn't popular because his gameplay didn't appeal to most people, yet this update was supposed to raise this popularity by making the gameplay fresh. He was the wiser, calm and imposing Darkin of the lot, and he was supposed to stay like this. Lore or not, they erased a champion to replace it with someone else, thats why people are complaining, and they have reason to
