Little call out to the community

Hi everyone, Falrein/Caithresh here, and today, I'd like to express my disappointment towards our community (you can see a TL;DR at the end because I want a bit off topic).

So. Let's review what happened... Shyvana's bio received changes. "Minor fixes". However it turned out that there was a massive problem of communication, and the bio we had until now was not the one we were supposed to have. So it made a big mess of things because the changes ended being major and not minor. Yes, Riot fcked up.

However, I do not think it justifies all the hate they've been receiving lately.

Don't get me wrong. We can't agree with all the changes they do. And we can't like everything they write. And it's completely okay to express your feelings about that...

... As long as you stay polite and nice. I've seen some people being needlessly rude in their comments. Riot does fuck up sometimes (we all remember the Darkin retcon for example), but they are human beings, and human makes mistake. Sure they are professionals and paid for that, but no one -and I say NO ONE- is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes.

Being rude and insulting Rioters won't make them listen to you. On the contrary. They are humans for Syndra's sake! If you keep being needlessly rude and mean, they are just more likely to feel bad. And dare I say it could be even worse. Negative feedback can be good. I'm fairly sure a polite, well constructed opinion will always make them more prone to listening to us, even if it's negative. Being a dick does not help.

Rioters are nice and they are always willing to answer questions (when they can, at least. Some things have to be kept hidden...). I had the chance to discuss with some of them. Scathelocke, Bioluminescence, Ant in Oz (just to name a few). They are lovely people, who are willing to lift our concerns and help us understand when something's lacking.

Over the last few weeks I've seen many comments saying that Rioters don't care about us, that they do not listen, and that they don't want to communicate with us. And it's obviously wrong. As I stated before they are always willing to discuss. But if we, as a community, keep insulting them? They might not do so anymore. They could honestly just write their stuff, go home and be done... But they actually take some of their time to discuss with us, which is honestly really cool. They are accessible. I do think that after all these discussion they remember and acknowledge some of us (or at least I hope so... Am I known as the crazy Syndra guy? :')), such as The Iceborn, Malicious Metal, and more.

##[TL;DR starts here]

But oh well I'm going off topic. What I mean is, Rioters are people. They deserve to be treated with respect. We can't like everything they do, that's a fact, but there are ways to voice it. We are civilized people. And I believe that each one of us can act as such. We, as a community, can do better. When they fuck up, when they disappoint, let's not insult them, but let's encourage them to do better too!

On another note, I'll spread some love because as many know, it's my second best talent! I'd like to give a big thank you to Riot's Narrative Team(s) for their job. I probably said this before but you created a big(ish) community that loves and supports your work. We're patiently (not really) waiting for each lore release because we love it, and it unites us into a great community that is always craving for more. We can't wait for the bigger stuff like the incoming Novella, that will hopefully be a success because DUH WE WANT NOVELS!

But anyway, I did not make enough Syndra references on that post so I'll leave it at that... More, lore can be so much more!

I understand what you are saying. I do think Riot holistically "cares" more than most companies, but no to the level you stated.

Riot has strong favoritism to champions. To deny this is only to lie to yourself. Some of this is influenced by popularity, some by personal preferences of balance/narrative members.

I try not going to the level of "these swine ruined my champ!", but I love Shyvana (and Syndra both like a lot.... unhealthy amount of a lot. No seriously it's a problem please help.) so when they destroy her lore and then stayed silent for days... I got upset. I personally made statements like, "They don't care about Shyvana." etc. And sorry buddy, but I still feel that way. Perhaps this is just anecdotal, but I personally asked Meddler 2 months + ago if he could add Scaling with Elder as a QOL buff to Shyvana. His response? Yes! After 2 patches I asked again as it wasn't implemented. Hes said he thought it was and that it will be in 9.4. We are now working on 9.6. Had this been Yasuo do you think Meddler would just ignore it?

Shyvanas Lore was out for a few days now, TONS of post have been made with detailed reasons why the lore was incomplete. I personally even complimented cool new aspects it brought, like adding the rune shard, and giving Yvva a reason to wait (the other eggs). Riot made 0 attempts to state why it was changed, that they screwed up and used the wrong notes, (either before or now doesn't matter when), or even that "hey we are looking into this now to make sure we understand what happened guys." Any of those 3 things instantly show that Riot care enough to keep us in the loop. Additionally some very optimistic people said "it's change for some future dragon stuff." While this is no longer a rumor since we know it was a mistake now, even if it was why not jump on a post and say "it sounds bad, but you'll see why soon ;) " then all these angry people are now excited!

This disconnect exist, there are cases for when Riot does keep the community in the loop. Game play updates is a perfect example, but more often then not. The community is left in the dark about a lot of things.

I do not think badly of ANY individual even Meddler in Riot. The way they do their job should not be a reflection on who they are. So I'm sure they are all super cool people. The Art/Narrative team have hit the mark MANY times. I know they are much better than what Shyvanas lore offers. However, that just emphasizes my point. Despite them being better than this they obviously skipped out on Shyvana, because shes not popular. I'm sure riot was a bit surprised (I was) by the amount of support for Shyvana that was out there. They were probably hoping that 3 post would appear die and leave her the way she was. Now the issues beckons for a response.

To wrap this up nicely.

  1. Riot does have favoritism.
  2. They do care, but not as much for less popular champions like Shyvana.
  3. The amount of times the community feels disconnected exceeds that of when the community feels connected.
  4. Riot employees should only criticized for work they a part of never for anything beyond that. They are not monkeys or any other derogatory remarks people make up. They are imperfect humans, that will make mistakes.
  5. In tandem to that though, Riot needs to own up to more mistakes, and keep community members in the loop.
  6. Not up there, but realted, Riot needs to be willing to scrap work "Like Kayles armor." To show they do listen.
  7. As for your vote? Close second ;), but I'll give you the yes.

Nah, Riot deserves what they get for rewriting lore people have been attached to for years.

Mistakes? Sure, got no problem with mistakes. Breaking the game for cash grabs? Kinda leaves me salty. Be unwilling to admit to mistakes you did make, therefore leaving game in a broken state in an effort to not have to own up to those mistakes? Also, pretty shitty. Overtly no longer giving a fuck because you know you are going to make money off the games hype, and the players who take this game seriously enough to care that its broken are a minority that you don't consider worth the effort pleasing? Ya that straight up pisses me off.

If I can make one assholish comment about this, it is that I love to suddenly discover people who "LOVE" a part of the lore while this was never expressed in a topic before. And suddenly, we discover 50 people who also feel the awful pain of a retcon/rewriting and upvote said topic.

Sometime I feel people want to agree more on argument based on someone disliking how changes works than actually get a real discussion.

It is the same when a "niche" champion get reworked, suddenly everyone loved that champion to death and feel its identity died, let they let said identity die and never feel impactful by never playing or talking about said champion before.

Dont get me wrong, I am being cynical, of course you can agree with someone points and feel that what they defend is legitimate. It is just this pathetic mob mentality coming with spitting on the workers because what they did didn't please you that just make me laugh and want Riot to take every lore you love and replace it by "Suscribe to PDP" or whatever BS joke you guys make.
