Message to the Community, What do you value in Lore
I've mentioned this as a reply in another topic but honestly I feel like this should be read and considered to really give some thought as to whether the community wants "better lore" or just a more restrictive lore structure.
I personally am getting riled up by the amount of topics the community creates that is doing nothing but pointing fingers at game that (as a MoBa) has no obligation to explicitly detail it's universe, yet chooses to go through large measure to do so.
They've just recently released an entire music video for Amumu, revamped the main map on the rift with brand new art and creatures all emulating the style and environment they feel defines "Runeterra", and even brought a civilization back from the dead from the Lore (Shurima), through a PLAYABLE event. This is the most they've done for Lore in forever.
Honestly what do you people want. You are asking for things that they are already giving you. And yes, there is constant crying out for written bio and the return of JoJ entries but...why?
If Riot was dishing those out then many would just be dreaming of getting more interactive and exciting additions to the lore..which is what they are doing instead. I simply don't understand what the obsession is with written and "Set in Stone" lore. The best part of LoL lore now is the fact that it is open ended, left to the players to define. Personally, I felt the retcon of the old lore was a wonderful idea. Runeterra lost it's "Truman Show" effect. The whole LoL universe was not squeezed under this ceiling of tying everything to the players, which led to large amounts of deus ex machina situations in many champion bios (ex. "insert really interesting character info and background here" + "devalue previous details because blah blah blah they joined the institute of war").
Most of the character were well fleshed out through in game detail, VOs, gameplay, with slight references to motive. This is the perfect sandbox to have the community create their own stories for these characters and really bring it color. Yet all everyone wants to due is chain everything down and set all this lore in written stone. Sure narrative is delicious, but aren't we already getting a nice dose of that every so often?
Don't get me wrong, there is nothing like a beautiful piece of prose to tell a story. But the best thing about having a game is that the prose isn't even needed, there are better more interactive ways to tell stories. And even more possibilities for story than every before with an online community that cares about all the characters with such passion.
You can keep bugging and asking for more specifics and more information that will only bog down future content as any future lore would have to ensure it is not creating any loopholes or inconsistencies; but honestly lore is in a beautiful state as it is.
The structure is loose, comfortable, and open to both creativity and imagination. We get visual and multimedia content for it, who else does that for a non-rpg game?
Are you asking for more definitive lore, or are you really asking a less expansive universe? I understand the excitement for the next book/episode of a series, or the story of the next game installment like Uncharted or Half Life, or even the next movie like the upcoming Star Wars film and it's implications to the SW Universe. But these are all examples of stories started/created by a single or group of writers. You want to see the writer's vision play out, the author's eventual conclusion and/or epilogue.
However LoL is an entire environment of characters (champs) designed by many different people with different themes and elements in mind. There is no single vision for any of them from any one person or group's perspective. This does not mean Lore in this setting cannot work. I feel storyline plays a much more interactive (yes I'm going to overuse this word as much as I please) role this way. The community has the freedom to play with and interpret the world as they see fit through the unhindered and open Lore.
Why would we want to shackle that? What are we really looking for when it comes to Lore?
