Targon and the Celestials
The release of
and the
VGU, introduced us to Targon's current thematic centered on the Aspects, these celestial beings that reside beyond Mount Targon's peak. Each Aspect embodying a different celestial concept or worldly ideal, in a fashion inspired by the 12 Olympians of Greek Mythology.
's updated lore last year introduced us to the celestials, ancient beings that used the World Runes to forge a new plane of existence and have since continued to oversee and guide the mortal races of said realm.
Outside of the fact that these 2, are celestial beings in nature, residing beyond Ruenterra's plane of existence, what are the connections between the Celestials and the Targonians?
This line from Soraka's short story:
Soraka felt her face melting into a smile. “I’m not afraid of wolves,” she replied, as light spread down her arms and into the wolf’s mangled body. “Besides,” she added, “Targon belongs to him as much as to me.”
That may seem like a extremely loose connection, until we consider Soraka's role on Runeterra. She came to untangle the knots of destiny, woven by the celestials that the mortals strayed from, then realizing through the knots and the chaos the mortals were forging their own destinies.
We are now made aware of the knots in the destinies of the mortals races of Runeterra, one such knot could have been, the Targonians overthrowing the Celestials, a destiny Soraka has come to accept. How did the Targonians over throw these ancient beings?
himself could be considered a celestial and we know, that Targon has used him to overthrow his own kin. Reminiscent of the way in which the Greek gods overthrew the Titans before them. Aurelion being a celestial is also hinted at in a
interaction: "What is this about... siblings.", this could also explain why Soraka's power is too much for her body, she would require a physical form equivalent to Aurelion's size to utilize her power without self harm.
Targon overthrowing the heavens could have happened after Soraka left the celestial realm, however, the main focus is that she bears no bad blood against the Targonians it seems.
I am excited to see whether this theory holds, as Riot has done a great job of set-up/ follow-up with the Targon lore. Soraka's role as a seer being hinted at in
's short story long before the Syndra story, and
's knowledge of the whereabouts of a World Rune connecting to the fact that the Celestials used them to create Runeterra.
A connection to the Celestials would also explain why Targon, antagonizes the Void, having Aurelion travel the universe sealing rifts. It is because of the Celestials' sudden creation of Runeterra, that woke the Watchers, ancient beings who live in nothingness and despise existence. Meaning if the Targonians overthrew the Celestials, the Watchers now become their responsibility.
If this theory of Targon overthrowing the Celestials holds, the Targonians giving the Shurimans the Ascension Ritual even further connects to Greek Myth, wherein Zeus gave the other gods (his brothers, sisters and children) dominion over something, to subside the prophecy that his children would also overthrow him. There were still attempts, however they were unsuccessful to overthrow him, aka the Darkin.
Hope you enjoyed my theory, thanks for reading.
