Anyone want to talk Demacia?

Hey everyone. So my favorite sets of characters in all of League are the Demacians. I'd like to talk about some lore and speculations and I'd like to hear yours as well!

Okay, so what I've been thinking about lately is Garen and Lux. If you remember, in Lux's league judgement (sadly not canon any more...), she makes reference to the fact that she's never met Garen, despite being siblings. This leaves open two main possibilities.

  1. The age difference is large enough that Garen was in the military before Lux was born. The art doesn't exactly reflect this though.

or my theory (I don't know if this has ever been talked about, I'm a little new to the boards)...

  1. Garen's family sent him away at an early age to live at the castle to act as Jarvan IV's friend and guard.

It's a bit dark if you think about it- taking a kid away from his parents so a prince could have someone to pal around with, but I think on some level it makes sense. Their last name is Crownguard, which means they definitely have a history of defending the crown. Secondly, if you listen to Jarvan's dialogue as he wanders around the Rift, you can definitely hear that he is at least a little bit spoiled. ("Who dares defy my will?" ) So Demacia is definitely one of those countries where their royalty takes advantage of their position. (See Jarvan's judgement: Royalty Has Its Perks) So I wouldn't put it past Demacia to do something like that.

Garen's off at the castle, Lux is born, and then they never meet. Their parents are proud of Garen for being in such an important position and making a name for himself, so Lux gets to hear all about him.

I also like this theory because it opens up some other things such as:

  1. Did Garen's "DEMACIAAAAAAA" personality come from growing up in the castle? Was it propaganda? Was he inspired by J4? Or would he have been like that any way?

  2. What exactly is Jarvan's relationship with Garen? How much of it is servant/prince and how much of it is loyalty/friendship?

And unrelated to this theory entirely, I've always wondered how Xin Zhao fits in to this dynamic. Does he interact much with Jarvan IV and Garen? Or does he mostly just watch them from the king's side.

There's a lot of dynamics going on here- I wish that they would be revealed through something, but in a game with so many characters and stories, I understand that they'll pretty much always just be speculation.

EDIT: Okay so apparently the lore says that Lux hasn't seen him since he joined the league, not for forever. My bad guys... I still like my theory though.

I actually totally forgot about how Lux and Garen have never met. I should go reread more League Judgments... Edit: Not actually true, as CupcakeTrap points out below.

In any case, regarding the age difference not being reflected in the art, I disagree. Garen easily passes for bordering on middle age (late 30s), whereas Lux is still a borderline teenager (early 20s at maximum). At the very least I would guess the age difference is a dozen or so years. Depending on how Demacia's military works, that's more than enough time for Garen to be whisked away from the Crownguard family to be trained/indoctrinated.

Given Lux's League Judgment (which, thanks to this thread, I just reread), I think it's safe to say that Garen went through the same indoctrination -- perhaps at an even younger, more pliable age (given that he was the firstborn child and a boy, he might've been inducted into the military earlier than Lux). Without an official Judgment of his own it's hard to tell exactly what effect the same process had on him, but the end result is that Garen seems more serious and genuine in his patriotism and sense of JUSTICE, whereas Lux is somewhat more light-hearted (but nonetheless devoted to her country). There's a hint of 1984-esque brainwashing at work here though, very dark stuff.

I adore Demacia (and by extension, Noxus as well -- in my opinion the two are inextricably linked). I think right now the lore could really use some pieces on city-states and locations specifically, rather than champions. Runeterra as a whole is such an ill-defined setting.

So the argument over who is "good" and "evil" between Noxus and Demacia naturally appeared here, but we all know the real good guys are Ashe's Freljordians. Duh.

All I wanna know is:

Where's my Demacian villain at, yo?

Every other nation has both "good guys" and "bad guys"; Noxus has Riven , while she may not be strictly "good" is at least not super evil like basically everyone else Katarina Swain Urgot . Iona has champs like Karma who want to save people, and Zed who's a murdery shadow ninja. Freljord has Ashe but then also Lissandra. Shadow Isles has someone who's not ostensably evil in Kalista. Piltover has Jayce but also Jinx. And Zaun, being the wierdos they are, have the hero Zac and the villain DrMundo. Shurima, Nasus and Xerath. The void, has one good guy Kassadin.Hell, even the yordles have Veigar!!

Why is everyone from Demacia a shiney armored goody good guy with goodness oosing out of their eyeballs! And no, I don't consider Diana to be a true villainous character. She's just pissed off her clerics tried to murder her. Plus her and Leona and Pantheon don't really feel like they're from Demacia, but more like some other country.

Where's my villain, who is very clearly Demacian in his way's yet really not a good guy?

I heard a while back that the Jarvan that attends the rift isn't even the real one, but Leblanc o-o Not sure the legitimacy of this though.
