Thoughts on Shared Splash Art in General

I might be the only one with this opinion but I have noticed that some skins have been suffering from the shared splash art phenomenon. Notably when 1350 priced skins like GOTS Xerath and Snow Day Syndra are being placed in the background of the picture and are having the detail of the image be of a lesser quality than characters in the front. When it comes to 750 skins, I feel that the price reflects the amount of work that RIOT needed to do for the splash but for higher priced skins, I think that we should be getting a better standard on our splash art. Also, if the champion is smaller or has more human features they should be given somewhat of a priority in terms of being in the foreground as they will benefit from the greater detail more than somebody like Nautilus or Malphite.

To be honest, after I buy a skin, I don't think I ever look at the expanded splash picture ever again but I see the cropped loading screen picture all the time so I don't get too thrilled with shared splashes in the first place. I understand that it is a way for RIOT artists to provide us with more skins every week because it shares resources between projects but I wish that we could get some improvements in their execution in the future.

  • On a side note, I would not be posting about splashes getting more equal treatment if I had not seen some of the fantastic splashes that some of their artists have done over the last couple of years. Since they have shown such a strong ability to make amazing art, it makes me as a consumer feel like those pieces have become the new standard.

I think Shared Splash Art tends to be fine on the 750 Line. Anything above it becomes an issue of how well the portraits can be handled. I don't think the GOTS was done too well, but the Arcade Riven/Battle Boss Blitzcrank was fine. Some of the latest Pool Party skins were good while others were meh (Draven/Rek'Sai). Just avoid crowding the champions too close together.

I'm personally not a fan of shared SA. It's not not that I th SSA are bad, just that i think individual SA are MUCH better. However, I won't be distraught if the continue making SSA.

Ok, so my full thoughts on shared splashes. Although I think I think seeing the champions interact with each other, I don't think that splash arts are the best medium to do so. For instance, in a splash art each champs face has to be clearly shown and it can get cluttered. Secondly, I find that with individual SAs, each champion can shine an show their own personality. Take a look at Pool Part 2012 (i think or whatever year Lee Sin, Leona, Renekton etc. PP skins came out) each champ got to show their distinct personality and tell their own story in each splash. Now I'm not saying that shared SAs are bad, Im just saying that individual ones are usualy better.

Having said that, there is only one instance where I agree that a group SA was the better choice and that is the Pentakill line. As I said, most of the shared SA are ok, good or really good, I just think individual SAs could be better in most cases.

DISCLAIMER: My personal opinion.
