My Opinion On Riot And "Diversity"

To put it out there plainly, I'm all for it. I think everybody deserves to feel represented in a game they love. However, there are bad ways and good ways about doing this.

Things such as race, sexuality, are generally unimportant traits in a character, and shouldn't become the sole focus of a character. These are just small parts of what makes the greater whole of a person, and when you draw all the attention to just one small thing, it ruins the endless possibilties of what characters could have been had you expanded them as people, rather than making them just some representation for a group.

Let's take a look at Varus, League's very first LGBT champion. I am a gay man, and as one, I don't really have any issues with him, he isn't to sterotypical or pandering personality wise, and out of all the male champions they had to choose from, was probably the safest pick. There is one issue though, that does crossed the line into pandering, and that was his story. With their comics and video, there was so much focus shifted onto the fact that Kai and Valmar are both men, and in a relationship, and then it feels you don't add in Varus, the actual Darkin and major part of their story, till like the last 2 minutes. If the focus had been put more into Varus, which again is their whole story/reasoning/major plot point, and had simply stated they were in a relationship at the very beginning instead of dragging it out, it could have been way more interesting of a read.

If you want to create a gay/lesbian/input whatever other sexuality, you don't have to put their sexuality out there as like the lightbulb for a charcter, but you don't have to keep it hidden either. Let me make another example. Lets say there's a new male champion, and when he taunts another male champion, he might on occasion say "Hi handsome." That's literally all Riot has to do. It's not too in the player's face, and it gets the point across that this character is gay without making it the sole focus of said character.

As a gay man, I'm happy that Riot is trying to make people feel more included, I just hope they don't go all Dragon Age: Inquistion and ruin their great stories and lore for the sake of "diversity."

How does "hi handsome" mean this person is gay in the first place?

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying it in a offensive way, but where do you live? A place a man can't pay a compliment to another man without being gay?

I call an handsome man handsome, doesn't necessarily mean I am attracted to him.

And how was Varus the SAFEST pick? Like c'moon.

These were the safest picks as their sexuality are still not clarified. They can be anything. Varus on the other hand had a family with a WIFE. He was one of the last to be with gay relationship.

Above list, I could believe every single of them being gay. But Varus was a disaster that they barely survived. If actual gay one was Varus, it would be even worse.

But as I said, there were far better options. Valmar and Kai feel more like an experiment. New side characters that have no too much relatability to players. Most doesn't even care about them. It is Varus. And I am definitely not satisfied with Valmar and Kai.

I honestly love Varus's story really much

And i would love to see more LGBTQ characters in league but as you said ''Things such as race, sexuality, are generally unimportant traits in a character, and shouldn't become the sole focus of a character''

They can be nice extras, but a character shouldn't be designed with just that in mind

The only thing that should be represented in League of Legends is "League of Legends"

Explain to me how the incorporation of diversity intrinsically leads to the "ruination a great story and it's lore", especially when the setting is one as malleable as fantasy.

While I agree that the original lore of Varus didn't focus enough on Varus himself I wouldn't say that this was necessarily just for the sake of pandering to the LGBT-community(though that was likely also a factor).

Why do I think this is the case?Because they did the same thing with Pantheon. His whole lore is essentially about Atreus only to replace Atreus with Pantheon at the last second, which is pretty much the same thing they did with Varus.

Its especially noticeable because in both lores you essentially have a new character who takes the place of the original champion only to get replaced by a higher being at the end(though there are obviously big differences). Atreus was pretty much a reimagination of old Pantheon(as the tough Rakkor elite warrior),while Valmar is essentially a reimagination of old Varus(as the one who gave into the corruption after a noxian attack) and in both cases Riot decided to focus on these vessels instead of the actual champ.
