I see much potential for IP development.
- A book, then a movie, for every champion.
- A book, then a movie, for every major event.
- Repeat 1 and 2 for every alternate universe.
- Comic books, then shorts, of minor events.
Riot may be sitting on billions of dollars of intellectual property. They owe it to themselves and to us to develop it.
To that end, let’s talk potential revenue. 70 million people play League. Let’s say that they act like 7 million people who buy everything the company makes. If a champion book costs just ten dollars, then each one is worth 70 million dollars. With 138 champions, the champion book deals alone would be worth over 9.6 billion dollars.
If we assume that the movies earn as much, we are talking about over 20 billion dollars. Throw in half of that for the books and movies of alternate universes, along with the comics and shorts. That’s 30 billion dollars of untapped intellectual property. Developing just 1% of it annually would bring in 300 million dollars.
Even if so many commercially flop that total development costs reach 90% of revenue, then Riot would be left with 30 million dollars. That’s 30 million to hire staff, expand the office, and upgrade equipment every year. Or, after corporate tax, it’s 28 million dollars to be disbursed to shareholders through dividends and buybacks.
It’s almost irresponsible to leave this money sitting on the table, especially when Riot has a history of writing good lore. They can never be sure of a hit, but creativity entails taking the risk of penning a flop. What if they find out they can just make another decent movie every year? None of them has to win the Oscars to win the hearts of the people who will actually care about it. :/
