@Riot: Why the Poppy comic is so good and why I love this champion now, well done

League of Legends | A Hero's Calling

Okay, so everyone has their own opinions about the Poppy update, but all it took to sell me (at least on the story aspect) was this comic. This thing is something I wish I was capable of writing for my own fiction works, but that's just me being jelly. Also as a sub-point, I didn't see the tag line of the comic until just now, so I was amazed at the personal interpretation I had when I finished it and then realizing it was the correct one. :P More to the point, this comic is phenomenal. Essentially, Riot has taken a dead character concept that had absolutely zero depth and created a completely rounded character from it. Just as I read through the comic, I could tell that Poppy was naive to the point where she was missing something, but I wasn't sure what. As I kept reading and the soldier fell to the beast, she expressed sadness over his death, but she also felt a duty to protect the citizens of the town. She fights to the death with the beast and emerges victorious, and as she departs the town, she remarks that maybe she can find the hero in another town. Obviously as readers we can see something she can't (dramatic irony), but when I placed myself in her shoes, I felt something that was particularly odd. I felt a depression and sadness when I thought about it. Think about it: she has been searching for what is most likely a long time (based on her thought process before and after the soldier dies), and every instance has been a disappointment. She feels inadequate as a mere keeper of what she considers to be the key to Demacia's future, so how could she ever see herself as a hero? She has been searching and failing time and again, but she is missing the picture. She most likely has an inferiority complex based on her race (speculation, but maybe) or based on past failures. It's possible the only purpose in her keeping the hammer is to allow her to mature to the point where she is ready to become the hero Demacia needs. This new character has a depth that really lets me feel the character's emotions and struggle of trying to prove something to herself (the idea that she is worthy to be the keeper of the hammer and that she can/will find the hero) but in reality, the hammer (for lack of anyone else to cite here atm) is trying to teach her a lesson in being confident in her own abilities and showing her that she is the hero that she is looking for. In a sense, Poppy is on a quest to find herself, but she doesn't realize it just yet.

This comic is amazing, and I am in love with this champion now. Well done whoever wrote this. Riot, give this guy/girl a high-five man! (and maybe some cookies or something) Let me know what you guys think. I love character depth, and I think it adds a whole new layer to the game itself. That may just be a me thing, but it's still amazing regardless. Keep it up guys!

I actually did not consider that. She's not as confident as one would think because despite her accomplishments, she hasn't succeeded in her intended goal. It's like shooting for first place, but only getting third place out of a million other competitors, some people feel that as a failure than as an accomplishment.
