"There were obviously concerns from the art team about how to make this not look stupid in game..."

In the Champion Insights: Taliyah article, it was mentioned that an early ult idea was for her to be able to destroy walls, one example being the wall around Baron Pit. It was scrapped for being more of a support ability, but as quoted in the title, the art team didn't know how to make it look good in game. However, after thinking about it for a little bit, the answer seemed rather easy: banish it to the Shadow Realm.

Namely: this. Specifically, the texture on Kassadin's void blade thingy. You can tell the blade itself has shape to it, but looking directly at the texture just makes it look like you're looking through a portal into the void. Take this, then, and stretch it out much bigger and you have your answer.

You have a support character that can place a zone on the map. Everything within this zone, including walls, is covered in the same or similar texture and is temporarily made an area where movement is allowed (as opposed to currently where the walls don't actually exist, they're just the art asset that sits on top of an area where movement is not allowed). Nothing needs to be done to the art of the Rift itself, or any map for that matter, and it looks fine because it's this massive magical energy field that is sitting on top of the map.

Dawngate had a Carry, Kensu, whose ultimate created a path through terrain for he and his allies to use. It created a glowing path that could be walked on to cross any wall. I remember Waystone mentioning that it required a lot of re-writing of the map code to make work properly, so I'll bet "spaghetti code" is a factor in this.

Well but it wouldn't have fitted thematically for Taliyah and honestly there are some serious problems with your solution as well: 1.It would be highly distracting to have such a big particle there,I mean if I saw something like kassas voidblade,I'd assume its some sort of damaging move and wouldn't go near it

2.Would the walls just be colored in this effect or would they completel be removed for the time of the effect? If they get colored then this can create readability issues(they wouldn't look like you can move through them and stuff like trees would could make it confusing to look at),if it just flattens the field, then it would create problems with the edges to the walls, since those would get cut-off.

Neat idea but I think that would only work with a void champ, as it implies tearing open a dimension through the rift. Taliyah is unrelated to the void. I hope to see such an ability in the future though!

The problem with that idea is that you place a massive particle on the map, which can be very distracting and inappropiate for a game that place visual clarity in such a high regard.

Not to mention in would conceal other Void-textured skills.

It could work, Dawngate had a shaper with this kind of ultimate, fired off a big ass skillshot that deleted terrain and gave a speed boost to allies in the area. When it went away it just shunted people to the nearest edge of the affected terrain. Neat ability.
