2018 Lore Tournament - 23rd December: Whom does the Desert know vs The Beast of Boleham Tower

Hey everyone,

we're ending the first round of the tournament today and determine the last candidate to move on into the quarter-finals! [poppy-wink] And because I don't want to be blown to pieces by a certain tiny master of evil, the full title of the story is "The True and Ghastly Tale of the Beast of Boleham Tower".

#2018 Lore Tournament: Day 18

Today, both of our stories focus on the greatest evils of Runeterra. In the first story, Kassadin contemplates the fate of his homeland, his battle against the Void, and the lengths he will go to in order to stop this all-consuming menace and take back what was taken from him. In the second story, the first story's great evil of the Void is rivaled by none other than the GREATEST evil of all, Veigar! In this story, he attempts to scare the members of a small town, whom he begins to realize he actually helped...

Whom does the Desert know? by Laurie Goulding Kassadin contemplates if his homeland of Shurima will ever rise again. Staring down into the great abyss, the Void Walker prepares to fight the terrible creatures that crawl out for underneath. For the desert knows Kassadin, and that is his name, but the desert does not know the Void, and he whom the desert knows will send back the monsters from where they came, until the end.

However, the people of Boleham begin to look differently upon the Tiny Master of Evil when they realize that he has actually been helping them by warding off the evils that their town was facing...

[Edit] Voting is finished, earlier than usual. From now on, I want to call results 7 AM PST, exacly one day after the poll went up. For today, Veigar remains victorious with 36 to 25 votes.

Oh boy this is a hard one, and they are so very different. Each sort of does its own thing really well, and it's extremely hard to compare.

The Beast of Boleham Tower was better written IMO. Kassadin's story didn't do it for me.

It was too descriptive and dramatic. Not how I pictured Kassadin's thoughts.

Tough one for our man Kassadin today, and he's such an awesome dad. I can't wait until he gets back with his daughter, especially since I think that reunion can fix a lot of problems that people have with her.

However, I've gotta give it up to the Tiny Master of Evil today. His story is just too good.

I love them both... but I will have to stay with the Shuriman boi cause we learned more about Ascended artefacts and the Voidborns.

Veigar's story is a highlight for me and top contender tbh.

Man I really love Kassadin, he's my favorite champ, and Veigar is my second favorite champ to play (Ekko being fave for lore), and both of these stories were just missing a lil bit for me. Kassadin was not really talking about himself, instead concerned with his weapon and his battle at hand, which I suppose speaks to his hollowness as an instrument of vengeance but doesn't really truly reach his essence. Veigar on the other hand getting a kind of confusing intro to his story, where the townsfolk reacted kind of strangely to his theatrics even before they saw his true form (I think?), and while I loved the ending, it was about what I guessed lol.

In the end, I think I liked Veigar's better, despite the interesting Ascended worldbuilding that Kassadin did. It just didn't feel like I saw his character shining through in that story that much.

Side note: I absolutely love Veigar's new bio. It still writes him as a kind of silly character while giving him a meaningfully dark backstory that isn't vague, and tying him to the GREAT DARK LORD MORDEKAISER! If that's not a key point to enter some serious lore in the future, idk what is. Mordekaiser Veigar
