Will Irelia's VGU bring about an update to the Noxian invasion of Ionia?

There are quite a few "historic" events in the history of Runeterra; The Rune Wars, Icathia, The Fall (and Rise) of Shurima, War of the Three Sisters, Darkin Invasion, etc., etc.

However, there is 1 historic event that has gotten very little attention ever since it's inception.......and that was before the retcon.

#The Noxian Invasion of Ionia.

In the past, we've only gotten little snippets and tweaks here and there. Yasuo added a little to the story, as well as Varus (with his story update), and, amazingly, some context from Kled (of all people). Swain's VGU hinted at what was to come, since......well.......IRELIA IS THE ONE WHO CUT OFF HIS ARM! There's also the notion that Singed was involved, by developing chemical weapons for Noxus.

But besides all of this....we have yet to get a proper update to one of the most popular events that Riot has done in the past. You see, Ionia vs Noxus was the OG event. Even before events were a thing, Ionia vs Noxus not only had a significant impact on the lore, but also on the game (well....kind of), by introducing a new item: .

What happened was there was an actual match played of which 1 side could only choose Ionian champs (and some others that "allied" with Ionia), and Noxian champs for the other (as well as some others that "allied" with Noxus). The team playing Ionian champs won........and, well, the rest is history. This match was really the only match we ever had that was actually "canon" at the time, because you could think of it as the champs actually fighting each other within the rules of the Institute of War for declaring who truly owned Ionia. Had Ionia not won, and Noxus did......the game may look VERY different right now.

But now that the IoW no longer exists within the lore.........there has always been a question lingering in our minds of "What's keeping Noxus from completely curb stomping Ionia?", and so far, the answer has been.....well, nothing. That said, with everything we've gotten since the retcon, it tells us that the Invasion still didn't go according to plan......in fact, it likely went horribly wrong.

And I'm hoping Irelia's VGU gives us some insight as to why it went so wrong.
