"Legend speaks of his dominion over death and time." Nasus and Kindred
So I'm just sitting here, minding my own business when all of a sudden a new skin appears on the pbe: Spirit Fire Brand, and I'm thinking to myself, "hey, his colour scheme kinda reminds me of the glow in the eyes of Wolf and Lamb. I dig it!" and then I remembered "Oh yeah, Nasus has an ability called Spirit Fire! It's his E!" and then I thought for a moment before saying,
"Hm...Maybe there's more of a connection here."
So with Kindred out we have a better idea of what death looks like in Runeterra. Specifically it looks like a pair of kinda creepy anthropomorphic animals but regardless, thanks to Brand's new skin I'm left wondering if the there's some deeper connections we haven't thought of yet involving Kindred, and looking at it, I'm thinking that perhaps Nasus is someone with a few ties to Kindred. So here I'm looking to examine some of the finer points of Nasus to discern if there might be some kind of connection, but of course this is all speculatory bollocks so take it as you take all theories, with lots of salt. Or vinegar. I don't judge.
So first and foremost, his in game abilities. Nasus has a bunch of them and with enough thinking just about all of them can be tied to death:
- Soul Eater: Well that's pretty obvious. Nasus can drain the life essence of those he attacks to revitalize himself. More specifically he's taking from their souls.
- Siphoning Strike: Kinda like the above, but instead of revitalizing himself he draws upon the essence of those he kills, allowing him to strike with the collected power of all those he has struck down. Drawing from his passive this can be inferred to be him using the souls he has consumed to power his attacks.
- Wither: He ages people, just like that. This ties more in to control over time than death, but given the fact age directly leads in to death anyway it only helps his case.
- Spirit Fire: This was the main thing that drew me because this is more specifically a death related power. The fire of death, one that pierces the body and burns souls. Many champions have abilities interacting with or fueled by souls, but very few have ones that actually call upon the power of death itself., and those who seem to often draw upon more corrupt energies that anything specifically from the realm of death, as far as I can see (which might be a bit of a short distance, I dunno. This is all speculatory remember!)
- Fury of the Sands: Nasus grows huge and is surrounded by powerful magic that brings destruction to his surroundings, but given Nasus appearance while the ability is used and looking at his other abilities I feel that this is Nasus actively drawing upon the powers of death to empower himself.
So all in all, looking at Nasus's in game abilities, I do think there's a correlation. All of his abilities tie in to death in some way, and visually they're somewhat similar to Kindred's abilities, most notably Lamb's Respite, which has a visual appearance and colouration that I'd say is quite similar to the abilities of Nasus to a degree. Now I might be dumb for two reasons, because one I might be drawing conclusions from straws, or I'm rehashing stuff that's already known considering that Nasus has always been the guy who "taught about the cycle of life and death", but I wanna look at that too, because I feel there's a bit of an unseen connection to Kindred, namely in Nasus's physical appearance.
Now immediately when you think Nasus you think of Anubis. I mean Shurima is basically Runeterran Egypt and Nasus has always been the Anubis of League, but Kindred could give Nasus's Ascended form more context then you'd think. Let's assume for a moment that ancient Shurima had legends of Kindred, since everyone has legends of Kindred. Now let me pose a question:
What would a Shuriman Kindred look like?
Well for starters it wouldn't be a lamb and a wolf specifically in terms of cultural views, because sheep and wolves aren't animals known to live in savannah/desert environments that Shurima has had over the ages, if we're looking at it from a real world animal to environment angle. Environment wise, Kindred would be seen as creatures native to Shurima, so for Lamb we'd likely be looking at a goat, and for Wolf perhaps a jackal, for a combo of "Kid and Jackal" as the duo that make up Kindred. Now of course as I said, that's looking from a real world angle, so Shurima might have sheep and wolves, but I do feel there's some merit in considering these things as when building anything in fantasy, the real world's the reference from which everything's drawn from, so all in all I'd at least say that Shurimans might view Wolf as a jackal. And who do we know who has a particularly jackal like constitution?
Yeah you get where I'm going with this!
So looking at Nasus's lore we know he was a teacher, a curator, a guardian, and taught people about the cycle of life and death. Regardless of the fact we're missing a good chunk of Nasus's backstory, I feel that he'll retain his librarian status, so then we can infer that if Nasus taught of the cycle of life and death, he also taught of Kindred, and what their role is. Nasus's knowledge of death of course then exemplified by his Ascension, and he was given a fitting form; the Jackal, to compliment the Shuriman view on the god of death that is Kindred. With his Ascended powers Nasus is able to draw upon deathly energies and the power of souls, and hell his Siphoning Strike stacking is kinda similar to Kindred's stacking marks if we're also looking at game play.
I feel like I've went in to a really round about way of explaining myself, so I'll summarise as best I can: I think that the powers Nasus calls upon are directly tied in to Kindred and the domain of death, and that his form as a jackal also ties in to this assuming that the Shuriman view of Kindred is similar to how real world Egyptians viewed Anubis. But now I also have some questions. Has Nasus ever actually met Kindred? What would they think of each other? I feel like this could be an interesting relationship, provided I'm not just talking bollocks here!
Also as a final note:
"Death is a harsh mistress."
I know it's an old quote but just imagining Lamb's reaction to such a statement is kinda funny to me! So anyway thanks for reading, now I want to ask, what do you guys think about a possible connection between these three beings, and could there be more I haven't considered, or am I just talking out of my arse?
