Jhin theme: The analysis
I was thinking about writing this post for some time now. First I wasn't sure it's necessary, but in the end I decided to do it if not for the League fans (which many of them I'm sure already see all I'm going to analyze), then for all the other people that are not able to see the genius of this song due to the lack of knowledge of Jhin's character (and I plan to send this link to everyone I know and is interested in the song).
For the sake of comfort, here's the YouTube link so you can directly listen to it and see my points. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSQZqVsaKWY
#Overall composition According to my observation, Jhin's theme is divided to four segments. Jhin's favourite number is four, actually he's obsessed with it to extreme measures (common knowledge and a meme in the League community). The segments are following and I took the liberty to name them:
- Preparation
- Chase
- Creation
- Piece
The segments are not of the same length; anyway, "symmetry is so boring."
Now I'm going to go along this list and analyze and explain all the thought processes that fueled my final judgement.
#Preparation The first stage (pun intended) that begins at [0:00] is dominated by the mechanical sounds of Jhins gun clicking, which creates the rhytm. The thing is underpainted with the music and the choir singing - the main theme throughout the whole song - which may at first sound little bit conflicted with the gun sounds.
The first stage symbolizes the part of the killing process where Jhin actually prepares his tools (clicking/rhytm) and increasing thirst for bloodshed (music). Consider the music itself the actual Mind of the Virtuoso - it tells you what Jhin's mood is. In the beginning I'd say it's something between excited and nervous - as he needs to saturate his desire... as most of the performers feel before they get on the stage.
#Chase [0:52] We're instantly thrown to the mind of Jhins victim (the voices get silent) which pulls us right into the action. The victim runs, zigzacs - for now only chased by paranoia (which creeps as the background sound), because he/she still doesn't know what is the danger - up until the first shot where Jhin reveals himself (not necessarily literally, just to concretize the danger) at [1:05]. He's shooting and intentionally missing, just to stress the victim - we know because the voices announce that we're in his mind again and he's enjoying the increasing panic of the victim which enters the field of view again in [1:19] and runs until it get's shot dead at [1:31]. Dead silence follows.
#Creation Slowly we can witness the process of making. This part is the longest (up until [3:24]) - as is every piece of art's creation process. First we see glimpses of inspiration (short enters of the voices). At [1:55] Jhin knows what he's gonna do with the body. The voices get more and more confident as he approaches his goal. The gentle violin solo symbolizes the mastery of Jhin's craft - the same amount of mastery needed to perfectly control a music instrument like that, the amount of mastery Jhin wields his music instrument (Whisper - his gun) with. By the end the voices and the violin click together perfectly as they are performed alongside each other.
#Piece [3:25] Piece as an art piece. Peace as the peace of mind. Jhin satisfied himself once again and stares at what he created. From a duet, the violin and voices now switch to a conversation - this part is my favourite. Starts calm and slowly heats up into a glorious gradation. And in the end... he just vanishes, as he always did.
Wow this actually turned into a wall of text. I'll just cut it here so I don't add more. Thank you all who read the whole thing, have a nice day.
