A list of theories and thoughts regarding Syndra

Hi everyone! I’m Caithresh! For those of you who know me, I’m a huge Syndra fan, and the League of Lore discord server, we’ve been having a lot of Syndra talk lately (mostly because of me but anyway). And it made me want to write this thread, so here I am, writing it, instead of doing my homework. For starters, I’d like to say to apologize in advance for any spelling or grammar mistake, as I am not fluent in English. Also, when it comes to Syndra, I’m completely biased so I’m gonna try my best not to be here. Now, without further ado, let's get started!

Syndra’s destiny

We know for a fact that Kalan asked to watch over the Dael’eh Ahira. I might be wrong, but it feels like the seer sent him here.

After they are defeated at the Placidium, you must stand vigil on the isle of Fae’lor, guarding over the place of dreaming.

The seer says, “you MUST stand vigil”, not “you will”. She gave him the indication. Why? She probably knew that Syndra would awake (I mean she’s a seer…). Would that mean Syndra’s meant to be a part of something great? Maybe I’m getting the quote wrong. Maybe this “must” implies what he would have to do in the future. Yet, he was not appointed there, he specifically asked for it. I just feel like this whole series of event were meant to happen, so that Syndra coud awake at the right time for something. I might just be crazy, seeing evidence where there’s none, but hey, that’s what theories are for right?

The Dreaming Pool, an endless prison or a temporary jail?

Another theory (this one isn’t mine only, but we’ve talked a lot about it on the Lore of League server) is that Spirit of Ionia (We call it Liz) trapped Syndra so that she would change the way she acted the day her powers awakened. Quick reminder: after a scolding from her mother, she fled to the sacred Ghost-Willow and started to calm down. However, one of her brothers, along with his friends, threw a clump of dirt at her head. At this moment, she just let her rage surge within her, and her powers awakened, destroying the Ghost-Willow’s powers. This alone doesn’t prove anything. However, at the end of the color story, she traps Kalan, her vastaya jailor, inside the dreaming pool. What happens then? Kalan dreams of the moment a seer told him of the two paths that laid before him. The moment he chose to betray Ionia so that his wife and children could live, even though he would be alone forever. Now, what’s the common point between these two? The Dreaming Pool showed them both major turning points in their lives. What if the Dreaming Pool wasn’t there to put people into an eternal sleep? What if it was just a way (for the Spirit of Ionia) to help people make different choice? Even though that seems weird, it’s the most plausible option. I mean, had I been imprisoned like that and changed my mind, I would’ve been hella pissed when I wake up no matter what. But if Liz was planning on letting Syndra imprisoned here forever, why not kill her? It kinda supports my theory that she’s meant to do something important, or at least has the possibility to do so, otherwise she wouldn’t have been protected this much so far, right?

Syndra and her lore update

This is more of a thought than a theory. I know some people don’t like Syndra as she is now. A lot of people were disappointed with her lore update. I’m just gonna state what I like in her new lore, and what I don’t like. Overall, I like her lore update. I like the fact that they kept her as a real powerhouse. I view her as the strongest human ever born (Since I’m not counting those who had to acquire their powers in order to be powerful, whether it’s from knowledge and experience (like Ryze), or jeopardizing magic rituals (like Xerath)), in term of raw magic power (there are too many variables to take into account to tell “yeah she can beat X but Y beats her because blablabla”, that’s not my point here). A theme that I liked before her update and that I’m not sure is still present is her powers constantly growing. Nothing in her lore affirms or invalidates it as far as I’m aware. I hope Riot will clear this someday. I’m hoping that’s still the case, as sometimes they do lore updates that overlap with gameplay, and her passive represents that part of her. But that’s just assumption. Also, I like the way she is powered by her emotions. She kinda looks like a drama queen, and I can totally relate lol. The only thing I did not like in her lore is the way Konigen (the elder that tried (and miserably failed :p) to dampen her powers) died. Now don’t get me wrong, him being dead isn’t the problem. The issue is the way it is presented:

She felt more betrayed than she ever had before. Konigen tried to calm her, which only fueled her anger… and in that moment, his focus was lost. The foundations of the temple shook. The morning light seemed to pale. Syndra rose from the floor, as her frustrations surged within her. She snatched dark orbs from the air, and cast them through her mentor’s body, forcing him to feel all of her bitter outrage as he died.

He tried to calm her. How? Did he just “Syndra, calm down…” or did he “Syndra, if you don’t stop it now, I will have to completely cut your link to magic.”? The threat makes her action more legitimate, but we don’t really know, so to some it feels like she completely overreacted, which is a legitimate feeling.

Finally, the most unbiased, legitimate, completely neutral thought on Syndra

I feel like Syndra could be one of the most powerful persons in all Runeterra. Of course, this is completely biased (and part of it is just for fun) so feel free to disagree. She’s already insanely strong, and she doesn’t even have full knowledge of her powers. Could you imagine if she were to learn how to use her powers correctly, learning how to cast spells and all? I’m not sure this will ever happen, as part of her core theme is outburst of emotion (?), but just … Imagine how stupidly powerful she could get. I mean, she’ll always have the boundary of flesh, so she’s more of a glass canon, but if she could find and use some spelsl to make up for that, I’d be afraid. But that’s just a biased what-if scenario.
