LoreChat: Favorite Champion Backstory

LordHippoman·11/6/2014, 5:35:22 PM·3 votes·1,341 views

I liked the responses I got when I made that topic about everyone's favorite parts of the Lore. It was cool to hear from people what they enjoyed. So I figured I'd do another, similar topic, to sort of collect some more opinions in a more positive matter than "Retcon was good/bad and you're wrong". We all enjoy the Lore of League, or we wouldn't bother coming on this board. (You know, unless you're here for the Art part. Sorry.)

So, my question today is, what is your favorite backstory for a champion? Not current events, not future ideas, just what made them the way they are today. Do a top 5 or so if you want and can't choose, it's whatever.

I'll start:

Alistar I love Alistar's story. The minotaur overcomes impossible odds and the cruelest face of the Noxian murder machine to become not a broken wreck or vengeful killer, but a guy who works for charity and speaks out against the injustices plaguing Noxus. He's a great fighter, but he shows that he knows the strength of words too, which makes him one of my favorites.

Elise Holy crap, Elise. Now, I've raised concerns in the past about how it's odd that her followers still...follow her...when she's revealing her identity as a horrific spider monster on the Fields Of Justice, but all that aside, I love her story. Being a sort of charismatic cult figure is kind of a common trope, but how many of them actually feed their followers to their giant spider god, and come back looking just innocent, happy to take the next batch on a "pilgramage". It's creepy, it's evil, it's perfect for her character.

Braum Braum is one of those champions who just makes me smile. His accent, his personality, trying to hook Alistar up with his pet cow...everything about Braum is just fun. And I really liked the way his backstory was presented in that promo site. It's like an old fable, with a hero faced with an "impossible" problem who has to think for days and nights, before finding a creative solution and emerging victorious. He's like Heracles, but without the whole crazy bloodrage family murder.

Leblanc andSwain Lumping these two together because they're similar. Mysterious origins, a hint of supernatural occurrences, and enough information to tell you who they are, but not so much you don't wonder what exactly is going on with them. Lots of fun with these two.

Viktor

I feel Viktor is very tragic, both his past and his future. He is a genius whose work was stolen by a trusted associate, sending him into a fit of depression. At some point, his mind snapped, leading him to purge the majority of his emotions and embrace a post-human ideology, one sadly misunderstood.

I like to think his "upgrades" and all work pertaining to the Glorious Evolution is a result of genuinely good intentions; Viktor sincerely wishes to better humanity through prosthetic enhancements and biological augmentation. What makes this sad is that he has lost his reason, not his intelligence, by removing, or attempting to remove, his emotions. He deprived himself of his humanity, and consequently, no longer comprehends human society.

post-humanism discussions are always so fun. It's one of my favorite topics. I could write more but I like what you're saying and I'm starting to get tired. Perhaps I'll continue tomorrow.

Veigar to me...

He was driven mad from imprisonment, and his E matches it perfectly. "Who's trapped now?!"

Plus, his R is like: "You think I'm short?! Well, better short than reduced to ashes!!" :P

Poppy Poppy's a badass in her story.

Teemo Teemo is freaking insane.

Rammus ...ok.

Veigar He basically tries to look so evil and powerful so that all nations will kneel before him. To stop all wars. Typical yordle, being evil, quirky and having hopelessly noble ideals. Veigar just took it to another level compared to the rest.

Zilean His story just feels so tragic. Doomed to watch his failure over and over again, incapable to turn back time and save the village that trusted him to protect them.

Trundle The old one. I liked the progression from naïve boy to cynical man (err, runt to troll).

I like Syndra's. She just wanted to explore her power, and the elders thought they knew what was best. Then she was threatened to have her magic sealed completely. She killed that guy. And Took his whole fortress and lifted it high above Ionia. Now she plots to kill the elders(karma is one)

I WONDER who my favorite character is?

I posted so much about it that I'd be surprised if anyone did not know.

Anyway, other characters that I really like are (just writing from memory; could have gotten some details wrong but I'm too lazy to check):

  1. MissFortune : Armed with wits, charm and her guns, Shock and Awe, MF tries to bring order to Bilgewater. She chose this path following her mother's death at the hands of a red-eyed bandit during her childhood. She was thrown in the middle of the ocean and left to drown but was saved by a young boy. She undertook pirate hunting in order to find her mother's murderer while simultaneously attempting to reduce the crime rates in the port-city. With the League, she used to gain influence and more agency over Bilgewater by participating in matches to boost her reputation among the people (and earning more bounty).

I liked the kind of respectful rivalry between her and GP. They had different ideologies, but they would not kill one another over that. (And wasn't GP the one who saved her in her judgment?)

  1. Caitlyn : Being both the sheriff of Piltover as well as a renown detective, Caitlyn has plenty of responsibilities to attend to: from protecting her city-state and maintaining the law to solving crimes and finding clues to track down the most elusive of criminals. Her unmatched talents as a detective are known across the continent, and other city-states would not hesitate to hire her to investigate crimes that they lack the ability to solve. She was hired by Demacia to crack the mysteries behind the theft of a royal treasure and finding the perpetrator. The only clues she was left to work with were cards that were marked with the letter 'C.'

She used to be a lone wolf but I don't know if she still is since she now has Vi as a partner. I still remember reading something along the lines that she preferred working alone in the JoJ.

  1. Draven : Because Draaaaven.

There are others, and I could keep writing summaries and what I like about them for hours on end. But that's it for now.

I like Draven for being a crazy gloryhound who joined the League purely because he believes he's the center of the world and believes everybody should get a piece of Draaaaaaaven to look at.

Braum , I appreciate for being one of the rare (if not the only) champion that develops on the whole 'Legend' aspect. That he's also a likeable and nice fellow with a funny accent also helps.

Ryze imo has a GREAT lore. Everything he was and has been is a fundamental part of Runeterra's magical nature... That's so badass! He's not an arse about it either, which is the best part. I really wish they could elaborate on him a little more, because if my hunches are correct from looking at his splash and Dark Crystal skin, I think his scroll carries a true apocalypse on its wings.

My girl Karma has a really inspiring story. The lessons she learned actually helped me through some of my own dark times.

TwistedFate and Graves have an extremely rich lore, tbh. It's a hefty moral conflict; yes, TF betrayed Graves but let's be real here - when were they NOT in a position to backstab each other? They didn't have a stable relationship to begin with. Also, TF was told by Dr. Priggs that Graves was swindling TF out of his earnings, so in TF's eyes he could only serve to gain. 'Course he was lied to, but you know. What did they expect from each other? Would killing TF really fix anything? Or would it just carry on the cycle of hurt that they grew up in...?
