The Void: Solving Lore Issues [Lore & Champion VO Suggestion]

The Void is a place of unknowable nightmares and hideous, otherworldly denizens. It's also the home to some of League's most ill-fitting champions.

See, the issue with the Void is that creatures from it are inherently single-minded, and often of limited sentience. This makes them fall flat as characters: instead of nuanced, relatable characters like we end up with fairly one-dimensional creatures. Cho'Gath lives to eat, and eats to live. Vel'Koz makes snide remakes while gathering knowledge, and does little else. Rek'Sai doesn't speak, and conveys nothing appreciable other than being a big monster.

These are the sorts of things that serve as great NPC characters (Herald, Baron, in-lore enemies, etc), but not as great champions. They lack the compelling hook we as players (and as humans) require to fall in love with. There's a good reason that some of the most popular void characters (in-lore, not in-game) are the humans -- Kassadin, Kai'Sa, and Malzahar all connect with the void in ways we can understand and appreciate as more than in-game entities that it's fun to stomp around as.

We want to capture the fantasy of unleashing these devastating creatures on Runeterra, which is fine, but we need a hook to make them not just another faceless monster of the week.

#So what can we do about this?

My suggestion revolves around the following quote from the Void's lore:

It is a force of insatiable hunger, waiting through the eons until its masters, the mysterious Watchers, mark the final time of undoing.

Denizens of the Void realm itself are construct-creatures, often of only limited sentience, but tasked with a singular purpose—to usher in total oblivion across Runeterra.

I feel we should embrace the monster-of-the-week feel, but express it through the eyes of the Watchers. Each champion would communicate telepathically with a present, speaking entity (likely a voice with echoes and multiple harmonics implying multiple entities), and express itself verbally as an animal like Rek'Sai might. These things aren't humans, after all -- they're monsters through and through.

Take Kha'Zix, for example. Instead of being a void-bug with a few dozen lines about eating people and evolving and not much personality behind him, he's a void-corrupted creature from the jungles of Runeterra, and the Watchers are pleased with their new toy.

His external voice lines become a bunch of insectile clicks and screeches, and his internal monologue becomes a dialogue between Kha'Zix (K) and the Watchers (W). And -- and this is the important part -- they respond to him. They egg him on. They talk about him as if he were a prized experiment. He's a creature of limited sentience, but they're invested in him, both as a toy and as a source of new information about the world they seek to destroy. Every Void creature becomes not only a monster-of-the-week, but another piece of insight into a powerful extraplanar entity that has motivations and desires and reasoning, even if it's not something we can understand.

Thoughts? I think this might give a distinct fantasy (and a unique but thematically shared fantasy, which is kind of cool) to the void monsters -- that of being an incredibly powerful entity with this immensely destructive beast at your disposal, watching as your creation destroys a puny, unprepared world. And isn't that what we all really want out of Cho'Gath?

I think that it would get boring quickly, sure, maybe one or two champs would be okay... but all of the void creatures doing the same? it would be repetitive.

Velkoz doesnt care about the rest of the Void creatures, he even killed some of them and i feel that KhaZix and RekSai would not care as well about what the Watchers want. KhaZix wants to kill Rengar... Why the heck would the watchers care about a random Vastaya? KhaZix does what he does to survive and because he likes that, not because someone told him to do that. and it is said that Reksai would kill any other Void creature that enters in her land, she is a territorial beast, the Queen of the Xersai, a queen like her should not follow orders from others.

What you suggest takes away some of the importance from the Void champions and steps on the territory of Lissandra, she is supposed to be the one following the plans of the Watchers, maybe Malzahar as well... But the Void monsters? They are doing what they want, without following a leader.

I agree. As a Vel'Koz main, a remake on his lore is pretty much needed. Hell, a remake on all champion lores is needed. Like, why remake a region and leave out its champions? Did that even happen with other regions like Demacia, Noxus, Bilgewater, etc?!?

God no. The denizens of the Void are supposed to be utterly alien, a quasi-Lovecraftian force of nature. To attempt to make them "sympathetic" defeats their purpose.

This would be really cool actually. I'd really dig it if Riot did this with the Void champions.

I was never sure about the idea that the Watchers are in charge of the Void. If the Void has existed since the universe existed then, all the Watchers did was come to know how to control it (unless they created everything, they are the Runeterra's Universe's God), even then it seems pretty uncontrollable (as per the story where it was used in desperation and basically destroyed everything).

I like the idea of twisted monsters, The Void is as endless at the universe, it also means it could have potentially have endless amount of beings as the universe, an untold amount of diverse creature, all ready to corrupt and tear your flesh off. Yet we know of only 6. Making all 6 essentially Watcher related? No, as I still find it hard to believe a race, no matter how powerful, are stupid enough to try and control something like the Void.

I've read fiction before, it does not go well.

I don't think this is really a good solution for the problem.

Like Ebonmaw Dragon already said, this would feel really repetetive really fast and would essentially mean that the void creature itself has even less of a characterization than it has right now(most of the characterization would go to the watcher instead).

Instead I'd rather see Riot trying to flesh out the void creatures a bit more and maybe let them outgrow their "programming" in a certain way.

Heck I'd say that if done right, then even these inbuilt urges can lead to some very interesting character development(how would Kha'zix feel if he thinks that he has reached the pinnacle of his evolution? How would he react if he met Aurelion Sol and realized that he is nowhere near the top or that the top might be unreachable for him altogether?)

In my opinion new void releases must focus on beings higher in the ''hierachy'' and others that embraced the void like lissandra.I dont want to see ( as champions..concept art is ok :P) every single void spawn the same way i dont want to see every single demacian soldier.we already have our fair share of monsters and i think they should be handled the way greenLore said.

The most interesting part of the void for me is not its denizens but its concept.I personaly doubt that ''the watchers'' will turn out to be just cosmic entities that want to devour the universe.Yea i know cthulu mythos and all..however riot is not obliged ( and in my opinion must not) make the watchers a carbon copy of the great old ones! I whould be perfectly fine even if riot didnt release any other void champs and just expanded the history of the void through the stories of other beings...( aurelion sul , malzahar ,celestials e.t.c)

As a side note iam against the idea of releasing the ''top dog/s '' of the void as champions as it will greately weaken the aura of mystery they have. ( however it could work under very specific conditions ..)
