I guess Shurima was a very patriarchal society which is why there is a lack of female ascended?
I would assume a female ascended would be quite a big deal in Shuriman culture, I wonder how special Setaka would have been in her human life.

Modern standards don't apply to an ancient culture. Were the ancient egyptians patriarchal because wars were fought by men?
An Ascended is someone who had earned it (with the difference of the traitor himself) and chose to dedicate ones life to the protection of Shurima. Naturally such a job would mostly be taken up by warriors who can protect the empire by force.
Maybe just cause the Ascended are mostly warriors and per average men are better in combat than women? And female Ascended or leaders exists Setaka for example and others like the 2 sisters from "Twilight of the gods" and Varus's sister
i mean, considering the setting, this is probably accurate.. but it probably has less to do with their leaders, and more to do with the warriors. Patriarchy implies they were ruled by men, but there could easily have been female leaders, while the majority of the highest warriors were men, which would actually make it a matriarchy, like an Insect colony.
for all we know, the general rulers of Shurima could have been women, sending all the men to fight in combat, while the women stayed safe within the city walls. after all, most of the ascended were some kind of great warriors, and were mostly male.. even the Darkin are just corrupted ascended, and only got their ascension by proving themselves in combat..
aside from Azir, we don't know a whole lot about the leadership structure of the land..
I can't find any hint towards Shurima being patriarchal. It was even ruled by an Empress when Icathia got conquered.
Settaka ?
Patriarchal and matriarchal societies describe societies ruled by men or women respectively. However if we were go for the frequent historical implementation in that patriarchal societies not only was ruled by men but also came at the expense of and oppressing women, then the hardline matriarchal equivalent, curiously enough, is not known to have existed in known history.
Most ancient societies were patriarchal, and Shurima is likely no exception. But at least if Shurima is to be based on Ancient Egypt like it appears to be the case, maybe Shurima is also similarly rather egalitarian like Ancient Egypt surprisingly was (given the latter's era and the kind of civilisational peers it had).
I don't think that they were patriarchal society I think they would give the ritual to who proved loyal and worthy for the ascension no matter the gender.
Because if we get a female ascended, she will look 99,9% human (but with animal ears and tail). This is how Riot works.
Also, the baffling downvotes in your thread make me think the average player here is as sexist as Riot.
I do not understand the down-votes on this. this is not a bad question. maybe there are female ascended and we haven't seen them yet? are there any evidence to say there aren't any other ascended aside from the ones we know?
But there were multiple female ascended (and darkin). They just haven't been playable characters in the game.
There was a darkin female or two mentioned in the twilight story.
