Riot is reworking every bio to fit into the watchers/darkin plot. I like that before there were many faction and conflicts in the lore. For example they just reworked the velkoz bio. He was a voidborn who was his own character but now he is just a puppet for the watchers (reek 2.0). He didn't retain his own identity, even most of the lore isn't about him (only like the last 2 paragraphs).
He isn't a puppet. Think of him as a commander under a dictator.
He's still one of the oldest, smartest, and most dangerous Voidborn. He just serves a higher power.
Also the Darkin are kind of a side thing. It's more like a Void plot, and even then not EVERYTHING is heading towards there. The first sect of lore retcons (Demacia, Bilgewater, Piltover, Zaun) had little to nothing to do with the Void, and even with Noxus it's only slightly inferred from Swain.

I agree with you. This change has completely taken from his character in my view. He's no longer doing this for himself, his purpose and goals aren't his. They are his 'creators'. It means that all Voidborn created by the Watchers as just beings to explore reality instead of the Void being filled with horrors and unspeakable things to begin with. Rek'Sai is a Voidborn, how does she serve the Watchers? She's no different to a wolf.
