Mordekaiser Color Story First To Be Removed?

Seeing as how Mordekaiser is no longer directly connected with the Shadow Isles and seemingly doesn't use the Black Mist as weapon anymore his color story "Shadows of Damnation" is now inconsistent.

So what's the protocol here. Does Riot go in and edit out all mention of the Black Mist? Past VGUs got to keep old color stories in addition to the new one if they remained plausibly canon. Does it get replaced by a new one entirely making it the first story to get axed by Riot to my knowledge? Does Mordekaisers' new story explain his relationship with the Black Mist (if one exists) enough to justify the older story?
