We need a massive VU overhaul for old champs

There are way, way too many champions whose kits are relatively fine but whose models and animations are still living in 2012. Olaf's got no fingers, Malphite is still a nose, half the yordles still look like they were smashed with a hammer, all of the hair on base models pre-Yasuo is atrociously modeled, etc.

I think that's a major factor in skin sales. Champions whose base skeletons are better to build from make for better skins and consequently sell better. If they'd do the work to make sure they have a better base model to build up from, then they could give better skins to more champions.

And the issue extends to the animations as well. Not just the quality, though some are incredibly stiff, but the actual fighting style of many of the characters as well.

Take, for example, Master Yi and Yasuo. Both have similar swords and fighting styles. Yasuo's is little less stylized than Yi's, but they still make for a good comparison. Yasuo's stance and attack animations closely resemble an actual katana demonstration. Yi, conversely, stands with a two-handed stance despite only attacking with one hand, and the way he swings his sword doesn't resemble any actual martial art. It looks like the work of someone who didn't use any references.

Another, and in my opinion worse, example would be Xerath compared to Lux. They both have a ton to work with when it comes to their particle effects. But Xerath's base floating animation is extremely static. Barring old Kayle, he has the stiffest animations in the game. Almost as if the entirety of the time spent animating him went into his dance. Lux doesn't move much either, but it's at least enough to make her seem alive. Hell, even Orianna and Blitzcrank are less mechanical than Xerath. Lux gets skins based almost entirely on the fact her particles are so welcoming to them, but Xerath would work just as well if not for how little he actually moves.

It'd definitely take a lot of work, but I think in the long run they'd see a lot more sales even from people who aren't begging for years for their niche main to get a new skin. And the creative team would get a much-needed break from working on the same 30 champions.

Master Yi may be inaccurate, but he was VGU'd, he was one of the earlier ones. I don't think he's even remotely close to their radar.

Also, Lux desperately needs an Ezreal level VU. Using her as a comparison to Xerath is not the best, since they both need VUs. Same goes for Blitzcrank, and Orianna kind of straddles the line of needing a VU, but also possibly just getting by with some new animations added in.

Yes please. I would be 100% ok if new champs were put on hold for it too. So many older champs look so outdated and even the voice lines are really stale or don't fit with the universe anymore. Me personally I want the Yordles looks to finally come in line with Poppy/Trist/Kled. Plenty of other champs that need it too.

Thank you, I've been ranting about the state of champion visuals every chance I get. I think there are at least 50 champs that NEED a VU, more than 1/3 of the roster and a sizeable amount of them could also use some ability changes or reworks. New champs lately have been feeling really boring and that's what I'm here to discuss. I've been thinking about it lately and I'm pretty sure we can trace a "golden age" of sorts for champion releases. In my opinion the period from Yasuo's release up until Xayah and Rakan was full of spot on champions with each feeling unique in their own way. I'm talking, Yasuo,, Vel'Koz, Braum, Tahm, Gnar, Azir, Kalista, Rek'sai, Bard, Ekko, Kindred, Illaoi, Jhin, A-Sol, Taliyah, Kled, Ivern, Camille and the two lovebirds. Some of those might not have really novel kits or mechanics, however all of them feel really unique, fun, thematicaly interesting. This is the longest streak of good releases riot has ever gotten. After that we got Kayn and Ornn, who both felt underwhelming imo. Kayn's terrainwalking didn't really do much to set him apart from other flankers and his design, weeeell, at least some people can fap to him I guess. Ornn had an outstanding design and backstory, his abilities however were not at all unique save for his item mechanic, which isn't even the strongest part of his kit. It's like they chose the most standard abilities from a Tank Champion Starter Pack. Then we got Zoe, which was a happy upset in the staleness that was to continue, but you could see they were really trying too hard with that one. Then Pyke and Kai'sa. Pyke was somewhat interesting I'll admit, but again his kit is too basic, nothing to write home about. Kai'sa didn't even offer anything new in terms of her role and was a boring design for her admittedly interesting lore. Neeko was basic af cutie mage with a gimmicky passive that was low impact after all, Sylas had somewhat cool gameplay but the dude is literally just a dude with jeans and Yuumi is a blue cat that doesn't really have anything cat-like in her gameplay. Now the new champ only adds insult to injury. Dash, burst skillshot, invis, stun, KK riot. Not to mention she adds little thematicaly to the game. A sassy brat is not exactly a unique concept for league. And she's already gotten a HUGE amount of backlash for her art design, more than Kai'sa ever got dare I say. Whether riot is going through a period of creative fatigue or they decided that their game will now be Rift's Next Top Model the result is the same. They focus on all the wrong fronts and the game feels like it's split in half by a time portal.

Haven't Riot said in the past that VUs weren't as well received as VGUs? Besides, there are always some changes they can make to gameplay, like with Ezreal or Morgana.

I do agree it's about time to VU a lot of older champions

AbiwonKenabi6/11/2019, 11:37:08 PM4 votes

I don't agree with all of your examples, but I agree that more Ezreal/Morgana-style VUs are needed. I was just thinking how Qiyana's autos are so smooth and satisfying to look at. And then you've got like, Kennen, who's model is so stiff and lackluster. His kit is fine, great even; he's got a distinct place in the roster, he's fun, but fair, has some differing build options, even his lore is ok with just a bit of extra detail. His visuals are just old, and he could look really cool. Olaf is another good example that you mentioned; lore great, kit good, visuals nasty crap. Even his Brolaf, which used to be such a fun skin, is looking pretty bad, with VO still fun, but scarce.

Even just small things like a VO update. When they brought back Lux's Voice Actress for Elementalist Lux, they also recorded a new VO for base Lux, and it did a lot of good. I cannot BELIEVE they didn't do this for Miss Fortune when they released Gun Goddess, because she is someone that could function fine without a VU for a while, but badly needs more/updated voice lines. Oh well, here's hoping they do more Ez/Morg type updates, which would be even better.

it's not like are asking for full scale redesigning. just making the models fit in with all the new stuff

But for real, there are a ton of champions whose gameplay isn't bad but whose visuals are terribad. It seems like lots of new people are going to be coming to League for Team Fight Tactics (tons of Hearthstone streamers got to play the game and their audiences may come over) and when they arrive it'll be embarassing that like a third of the characters look like they're from the PS2.

Yea, there are many that needs a VU and model update like: Amumu Anivia Alistar Ashe Blitzcrank Chogath Gragas JarvanIV Jax Kassadin Katarina Kennen KogMaw Lulu Malphite Malzahar Nautilus Nidalee Olaf Quinn Rumble Renekton Talon Teemo Udyr Veigar MonkeyKing Xerath Ziggs Zilean

I really doing like Ahri's model tbh...

Camille Ferrøs6/11/2019, 11:16:03 PM2 votes

Sadly they don't give a single fuck about anything that is not gameplay, skins or esports.

Varkul6/11/2019, 10:55:29 PM2 votes

Riot, please do this, imo yordles look like 2013 graphics while a lot of the champs(old and new) with updated models look great.

Riot definitely does not have the man power for such a project if they are splitting their development teams to both the mobile port and notautochess.

However hopefully they will be heavily inclined to do so after. Can you imagine someone new to the franchise starting up Teamfight Tactics and seeing Mundo's ugly ass looking then square in the face? Some of the champs are so outdated visually they are outright liabilities

Makarakarn6/12/2019, 1:19:01 AM1 votes

Definitely, I think that since Riot has had time focusing on full vgus and champs, they should finally dedicate some time to purely non gameplay updates cause a lot of champs desperately need them.

And here we see the root of the problem: they don't give them a VU because ugly base models on popular champions sell skins.

Snowbrand6/12/2019, 7:26:21 PM1 votes

Sure, but it's still enough time to warrant an update IF they need it, which a lot of champs still do (but the map is pretty fine and I don't think it needs it). Well, kassadin is my most played champion. But when you realise his potential and what he could look like (just go to the splash art and in game model of his daughter) and you realise a VU would be really nice. He could be and look cool... But that's my opinion
