Would it be possible to have a champ with visuals that reflect what the player has been building?

Would it be possible at some point for riot to create a champ (hybrid scaling could work as an assassin, bruiser, or tank) that changes visually as you build more stats on it? So yeah, the gameplay would have to be designed to work in support of the visuals.

So we've got this champ who starts out in a skimpy (or basic) outfit and wields a dagger.

If you buy one AR defensive item, the champ changes into leather armor. With a second defensive item, the champ is running around in either scale or chain armor. With a third defensive item, it changes to plate. Now if you build MR, a small magic shield appears in your off hand. Build more and it gets bigger and more pronounced.

As for weapons if you buy an AD damage item, the dagger becomes a short sword. With a second item, it becomes an arming sword. With a third item it becomes a great sword. As for AP, if you build an AP item, your weapon gets particle effects and a glowing rune. With each AP item you get, another rune appears on the weapon and the effects get a little more apparent.

So a build like this item 3124 item 3146 item 3153 item 3115 item 1419 would mean the champ is running around half naked but with a big-455 glowing sword. Basically Tryndamere.

item 3083 item 3068 item 3075 item 3193 item 3190 would give you full plate and a medium magic shield, but you are trying to stab people with a dagger.

item 3139 item 3026 item 3156 item 3193 item 3143 would give you full plate, a large magic shield, and a big sword that isn't glowing.

I think that should be a Jax ultimate skin. He equips what items he gets.

I love it!

So in a way it is something similar to Zac and his HP?

They do this with Kha'Zix and his evolutions. Changing it to specific items would be much tougher, but certainly not unbelievable.
